Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return in the first teaser trailer for Moana 2. The sequel to the hit 2016 film sees both OG characters who voiced Moana and Maui return on another adventure full of discovery, creatures, and the sea. And in the first teaser trailer we get to see Moana joined by a new crew of unlikely seafarers as they journey to the far seas of Oceania. We also get to see some creatures who are both beautiful and intriguing. We’ve got the blue whale and then what looks like a giant clams with multiple eyes and the coconut community.
The events of Moana 2 occur three years after her first voyage. And it’s her search of people beyond the shores of Motunui. In the first movie our lead answers the oceans call after a curse was incurred by the demigod Maui. Along the way Moana becomes friends with this demigod, figures out who she is, and also breaks our hearts thanks to everything that happened with her grandma Tala. There’s also the fact that the soundtrack for the first movie was done by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
This time around things are going to be a little different. Moana is older, more grounded in who she is. There’s also the fact that Miranda won’t be back to do the soundtrack. Instead it’s reported that the TikTok duo Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear will be taking on the song writing. They’re the songwriters who got into big trouble with Netflix for creating for profit Bridgerton concerts. But admittedly it’s always a positive to bring in more women songwriters/composers into the Disney mix, especially when it’s a story with a female lead.
