A24, the studio who brought us Hereditary and The Witch, is serving up a new horror tale in The Front Room. Written and directed by Max and Sam Eggers, it stars Brandy and Kathryn Hunter. Brandy, familiar to many for her music career, plays a women on the cusp on having her baby with her partner. And from what we see in the official trailer, with her driving and singing with no cares in the world, she’s happy with her life. That’s where her partners stepmother comes in.
Played by Hunter, the stepmother is overbearing, makes pointed comments left and right, and is weird. Not just “I have some odd hobbies” weird. We’re talking “old lady might be worshipping something otherworldly and wants to take my baby” weird. And Brandy’s character isn’t going to take it sitting down. She’s been happy and there’s no way this intruder into her life is going to upend everything that she’s worked on. That’s especially true when it’s revealed that the stepmother wants to divide Brandy’s family and take her daughter. Not today, Satan. Not today.
