Every so often, we get news of the sort that’s like, “we didn’t ask for this, but we’re not not going to watch it” variety. The latest: Hulu is bringing us a Dance Moms reboot, called Dance Moms: A New Era, this summer. Should we be so excited or so scared? Sources say something along the lines of “probably both, with a side of slight embarrassment.” In our defense, though, we’re not — and never were — here for the drama…much. It’s all about the dancing, and if the featured studio is as good as it was back in the day, buckle up. Because it’s gonna be good.
Now, here’s where it gets super interesting: Remember Abby Lee Miller and her whole “everyone’s replaceable” catchphrase? Well, it looks like she was more right than she, or we, could’ve ever predicted — because this latest reality series isn’t even about her. In fact, you might even say she doesn’t even go here. The ALDC? Also not here. So, that’s…some kind of news, depending on whether or not you’re a fan of hers and/or the OGs’. The bad news (at least for some of us): This isn’t another trip to Stars Dance Studio in Miami either. Nope. So, if you want to see the Stars Dance Company’s current generation of talent, you’re going to have to watch some actual competitions.
Now, here’s why we are, and you should be, excited about Abby and the ALDC’s replacement. First off, Studio Bleu is no joke. Second, coach Glo Hampton “can replace anyone at any time,” just like our old “friend” Abby. (Talk about borrowing and slightly tweaking dialogue from the original to put in the reboot, huh.) Speaking of “Glo” and her relationship to the original series…um. Remember Season 3? Gloria? That’s her, folks. In fact, the last time we saw her, the episode title was — get this — “Revenge of the Replacements.” Now, that’s what we call playing the long game.
What are the odds of Dance Moms: A New Era actually acknowledging this? We’re thinking slim to none, but a dance lover can hope. Or, eh, maybe not. If they pretend to live in a completely different world, that will give us something (extra, probably) to complain about. And that’s the fun of reality TV anyway, isn’t it? Giving us all an opportunity to be haters, no matter who’s on the receiving end?
…yay.
Anyway. We are, honestly, not even sure if this is news or a threat. But…here you go!

Dance Moms: A New Era will stream on Hulu beginning August 7. Here’s hoping these new dancers beat the curse of (some of) the kiddos from the original and, you know, don’t run screaming away from competitive dance after a horrible experience.
