If there’s one thing I respect about The Bachelorette, it’s that it will always, always, somehow, end up being the most dramatic episode yet …even when it seems like there’s no drama on the horizon. The Bachelorette 2×04 is no exception. Sam and Devin, who have been the source of the drama for most of the season, aren’t even on the group date this episode, and yet there is drama!
And of course, those two have their own drama, because you know they do. They seem more interested in each other than they are in Jenn. Or, at least, Sam is more into Devin than he is into Jenn. We don’t really need or want to unpack that in a review about a show that should be all about Jenn, but I would suggest these guys, and particularly Sam M. think really, really hard about why he keeps saying it’s all about Jenn when he spends so much of his time worried about Devin. Just putting it out there.
That’s without going into Sam N. There’s something about being called Sam this season, let’s call it the curse of the Sams. Not a good sign, I swear. But the thing about Sam N. is …plot twist, we don’t actually have to worry about Sam N. anymore! Which… is good, honestly. And the best part of this episode is that Jenn didn’t let him get to the rose ceremony. He made it farther than I thought he was going to make it considering he was, indeed, a little too immature for this whole experience.

I say this with the big caveat that this is a crazy ass journey and I don’t think anyone is actually prepared, but to think this is a good place for your first relationship is a little, I don’t know, naive. Things were always going to go badly for Sam N., I feel. Jenn did the best thing for him, particularly considering she wasn’t really feeling a spark, and put him out of his misery. He can now go date someone out of the spotlight and hopefully, he will do just that.
But you know what makes this an even crazier journey? The producers being messy and allowing a random dude from Jenn’s past to just crash the party? I mean, I get that this is a reality show and this adds drama, but why is this random dude here? I already have a bunch of random dudes whose names I have had weeks to learn in this show! I don’t need a new one! I don’t want a new one! I refuse to root for him! He had his chance! This isn’t a show for the friends-to-lovers trope. Get with the program, Matthew.
Yes, you thought the plot twist of this episode was rose ceremony-related? Oh, no, the plot twist of this episode is that there is NO rose ceremony, because the episode ends with Matthew, who we don’t know, begging Jenn for a second chance. And the preview for next week makes it clear she’s giving him that chance. Oh, yay. More drama. Different drama. But I don’t think there’s a way she ends up with this guy. Is there? Please say there isn’t.
Who got a rose: no Rose Ceremony, who dis?
Who is the drama: Both Sams, basically
Who will probably make it to the final four: Marcus, Devin, Sam M., Matthew
Who should make it to the final four: Devin, Marcus, Spencer, and Dylan
Odds on favorite to be the next Bachelor right now: Marcus
