Things that we’d never want to do? Well though the list is VERY LONG, we can truly say that if we were an actor discussing our very toxic characters backstory with our Mama would be towards the top. Come up with a backstory? We’ll pass. Discussing all the wrong things that our character could have done? Nope. Talking sex scenes? Ya, hard pass on that one.
Then again though, if our Mom was an actress, that may be different. If our Mom was Katey Segal, and in addition to being our Mom in real life, was playing our Mom on the show… maybe it would be different.
Jackson White, who plays Stephen on Hulu‘s Tell Me Lies – this is life for him. His Mom is Katey Segal. That’s legitimately gotta be a little weird to have your Mom be your Mom in real life, but also your Mom in a show that you play a walking red flag.
Lordy, we love it when press is happening for a show and right now is peak press season. The Tell Me Lies cast is doing a lot of press.
Last season we got to see Stephen go home for the holidays and that whole experience of being around his Mama. That was enough to make us never want to go home for the holidays, but for White, it was different. When he was interviewed by Deadline he was asked about his Mom and his redeeming qualities. It was in the Christmas episode and Jackson said, “That’s the perfect way to understand him is that episode last season, I’m so grateful for that episode.”
He continued, “I thought Meaghan just lined that up so accurately and it just gave me a total fuel for what’s going on with him. But it was kind of like what Grace said, I’ve never done a Season 2 either. And I was really nervous to show back up and do it. And I remember the first day the cameras were on us and I was sweating, I was really nervous, I was like, oh, how do I do this guy again? He’s so locked up, and mysterious, and what’s going on with him, and how do I f—ing play that? And then it kind of just worked in the favor of the story because Stephen is trying to figure out if he’s a good person, or if he’s a bad person, or if he’s done bad things. That’s his wrestling match this season. And all the nerves I had about that influenced it. I was able to just be in my head about that. That was just the question going the whole time is, am I a sociopath? Did I make a mistake? Just that inner monologue.”
He then continued by talking about if he worked on Stephen‘s backstory with his Mom, Katey Segal. He said, “Yeah, I didn’t have to prep anything. It was really potent. It was there. But yeah, like I said, it influences everything. That’s enough for him to go nuts. She was great in that.”
This whole show is crazy and well, we’re so in for the ride! The second season of Tell Me Lies starts streaming on Hulu on September 4th with the first two episodes. Will you be watching?
