There’s a new Matlock on TV! The CBS legal procedural introduces the legendary Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock in Matlock Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.” Since last year, the network has been teasing this series, inspired by the classic TV show of the same name. In May 2023, CBS released teasers for Matlock and The Good Wife spinoff series Elsbeth, which has already premiered. Now, it’s Matlock’s turn with a special preview of the series premiere on Sunday, September 22, at 8/7c on CBS.
Matlock will air in its usual day and timeslot when CBS reairs the series premiere on Thursday, October 10, at 9/8c. New episodes will air weekly, beginning with Matlock Season 1, Episode 2, “Rome, in a Day,” on Thursday, October 17, at 9/8c on CBS.
Written by executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman and directed by executive producer Kate Coiro, Matlock Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot,” introduces the brilliant septuagenarian, Matty, when she uses her unassuming demeanor to reenter the workforce at the law firm Jacobson Moore. As Matty says in the trailer, “There’s this funny thing that happens when women age, we become…near invisible. But it’s useful. Because no one sees us coming.”
From there, Matty gets assigned to Olympia’s case, and she meets the firm’s younger associates — Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis). Skye P. Marshall, who starred in CBS’s medical drama Good Sam with Sophia Bush, portrays Olympia, the senior attorney with a thirst for justice. Her ex-husband Julian, played by Jason Ritter, also works at the firm. Oh, and Julian is also the head of the firm’s son.
Matlock is already putting a lot in place with its first episode. Thankfully, there isn’t much time left to wait to see how it all unfolds. Plus, knowing that this show will be Emmy and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates’ final role before retiring from acting makes Matlock even more of a must-watch.
