Miya Cech is joining the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender for season 2. During Geeked Week 2024, it was announced that she would be playing the legendary character Toph Beifong. The earthbender is an OG character from the animated Nickelodeon series. Michaela Jill Murphy (also known as Jessie Flower) voiced the animated version. And now Cech will be playing her in the live-action version of the series.
The official Avatar: The Last Airbender posted a video of Cech reacting to the live announcement. She was seated with Gordon Cormier, who plays Aang, and Kiawentiio, who plays Katara. She said, “I’m ecstatic, I’ve wanted to play Toph for so long. This has been like my dream since I was a little girl. So ten-year-old me is definitely living her best life! But I really hope that I do Toph justice, and play her well!
But who is Miya Cech and what has she previously been in?
Cech is a Chinese-Japanese actress with only across TV and film. Notable roles in film are The Darkest Minds and Marvelous and the Black Hole. As for TV, she appeared in The Santa Clauses, Beef, and The Astronauts. In Beef, she played a young version of Ali Wong’s character Amy. She is the older sister of Kai Cech from the 2024 movie Ba. Her upcoming projects are Dear Santa, Marshmallow, and Under the Lights. Both were in the American Girl doll movie Corinne Tan.
Marvelous and the Black Hole was a notable role for Cech. It told the story of “a teenage delinquent teams up with a surly children’s party magician to navigate her dysfunctional family and inner demons.” She starred alongside the notable actress Rhea Perlman, from Cheers and most recently Barbie. Netflix also released a teaser, with what we assume is Cech, announcing that season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender had begun production. You can watch it below.
