Cate Blanchett is giving Chancellor of Germany with that hair in the Ari Aster produced film Rumours. In the film directed by Evan Johnson, we see Blanchett play Hilda Orlmann, one of the leaders of seven wealthy democracies. They’ve come together to draft a statement regarding a global crisis. They’re just doing it while housed in a beautiful homestead with delicious food and people waiting on them hand and foot. It all changes when the crisis comes to them.
This is where the satire comes in. Because yes, it’s seemingly the end of the world. But this is also movie that points out the incompetence of those who are meant to represent entire nations. And the official trailer for Rumours feels like a fever dream because it pits these G7 political leaders against what looks like the undead with a twist of “am I delusional or is that a big brain, hinting at a possible alien plot or everyone’s just delulu off political shrooms?”
From what we’re seeing, it could be all of the theories above or just an escape for real-life anxieties when it comes to our very own leaders ineptitude.
Read the official synopsis below:
Ricocheting between comedy, apocalyptic horror, and swooning soap opera, Rumours follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis. With unexpected, uproarious performances from a brilliant ensemble cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and Charles Dance, these so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence, contending with increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and they realize they are suddenly alone. A genre-hopping satire of political ineptitude, the latest film from incomparable directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson is a journey into the absurd heart of power and institutional failure in a slowly burning world.
