Here we go!
Second Chances in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 3 ‘The Lost Biker’

The case of the week in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 3 ‘The Lost Biker’ hits close to home for Oliver. It’s about a man who has to decide between losing all his memories progressively or risk keeping them but become unable to create new ones. However, that problem is not the one that torments Wyatt, Oliver’s patient, the most, but his non-existent relationship with his daughter.
Wyatt abandoned his daughter, he was never there when it mattered and now she wants nothing to do with him. This torments him and he simply cannot accept surgery without getting her forgiveness, without that forgiveness being his last real memory. And Oliver can understand that. His mother didn’t abandon him but his relationship with her ended up being destroyed and the two are just struggling to get over it and have a good relationship.
So, if Oliver normally doesn’t need too much persuasion to help his patients even if he has to cross several lines, in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 3 ‘The Lost Biker’ he is even more willing to help. At first, things don’t go as expected. The resentment and pain are too big for everything to suddenly be good, which is realistic and we love that this show takes the time to not make us believe that life is like a fairy tale.
However, when it mattered most, Wyatt’s daughter was there, willing to explore a potential second chance with her father. It is not going to be easy and nothing has been fixed yet, but her being there is a new beginning, it’s hope. And this reflects Oliver’s history with his mother. There is still a lot of pain, a lot of resentment, and many unsaid things that separate them, but the fact that they are both there, trying, is the beginning and the hope of something new, of a new opportunity.
The Bitter with the Sweet…

But, while it seems like everything went well in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 3 ‘The Lost Biker,’ it’s not entirely true. After the events of Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 2, Nichols knows that Oliver took Wyatt out of the hospital without authorization as soon as he sees his empty room. And he can’t understand why. He can’t understand why Oliver is so involved with his patients and trying to heal more than their medical problems.
That can go very wrong for both Oliver and the patients themselves, and in this episode, that almost happened. Wyatt gets really sick and Nichols has to save the day and he can’t help but get angry at Oliver. If only he followed the rules…
So, as we discussed in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 3 preview, it’s the bitter with the sweet with these two. After the flirtation in the previous episode, they are now angry with each other. Nichols tries to understand this part of Oliver, and while he can’t fully do so, a part of him admires this about Oliver, that he tries to fix patients beyond what any doctor would do… and that can’t keep him mad at Oliver for long, much to our delight.
As Oliver treats Wyatt, the rest of the team comes together for a new, complicated case, which begins to cement the friendship between them. They begin to bond, and we really enjoy seeing this. We hope the show gives them more opportunities to shine in the upcoming episodes.
Brilliant Minds airs Tuesdays at 10 pm ET on NBC.
