Another series leaving us too soon. According to Deadline, Netflix has no intentions of producing a third season of Unstable, its comedy series starring and co-created/produced by Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe. Ready to know all the details?
Here we go!
Apparently, the bad news has already been relayed to the team and, while it’s still sad, it cannot be said to be surprising. Season 2 of the show that debuted on August 1 failed to crack the Netflix Top 10, meaning it got less than 1.4 million views in its opening weekend and less than 1.3 million views in its first full week. Those are far too low numbers, and even more so nowadays, given that streaming service executives are increasingly basing their renewal decisions on viewing versus cost.
Apparently, Unstable’s cancellation was also not surprising to the producers, who have already been testing the waters to find the series a new home. However, being a Netflix original show is a tricky business, as it comes with many limitations. Because of that, a linear network would be the best option, which is the approach that the producers of That ‘90s Show are taking after the show’s cancellation.
Considering that Rob Lowe has close ties to Fox, where he has a deal, hosting and executive producing The Floor, as well as starring in and executive producing 9-1-1: Lone Star, it was only logical for the actor to try to revive Unstable with the help of Fox. However, it seems that the plan didn’t work out for him, as Fox already had its plans made, which doesn’t rule out a future new show with Lowe at the helm of the project, which is more likely.
Unstable, co-created by Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe and Victor Fresco, follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his highly successful and wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster. It was inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often humorously trolls his father.
The cast also includes Sian Clifford, Aaron Branch, Rachel Marsh and Emma Ferreira. The eight-episode second season had a new showrunner, Andrew Gurland, replace Fresco. Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe, Gurland, and Sean Clements served as executive producers for Season 2.
While original comedy series continue to be a weak spot for streamers, they are starting to pick up, as Nobody Wants This has been a runaway hit and has already been renewed for a second season, while Emily In Paris remains unstoppable and has already been renewed for Season 5.
Unstable is available to stream on Netflix.
