When we were younger and in school, we didn’t appreciate our English teacher trying to get us into Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those books that we were forced to read and therefore felt like we should hate.
However, as we’ve gotten older, we’ve learned to appreciate stories like Pride and Prejudice. We love them so much that we’ve though about sending apologies to our English teachers for the stupidity that we exhibited in school.
And now that we’re older we not only appreciate the books that we were forced to read in school, but also appreciate books that were inspired by these books. The Other Bennet Sister being one of those.
The book, written by previous BBC Two Controller Janice Hadlow, is set to be adapted by the BBC. It will be produced by Bad Wolf. The adaptation will be penned by The Power co-creator Sarah Quintrell.
The book tells the story of Mary Bennet, the middle sister who was really just overlooked in Pride and Prejudice. The official synopsis of the book, “What if Mary Bennet’s life took a different path from that laid out for her in Pride and Prejudice? What if the frustrated intellectual of the Bennet family, the marginalized middle daughter, the plain girl who takes refuge in her books, eventually found the fulfillment enjoyed by her prettier, more confident sisters?”

It continues, “Ultimately, Mary’s journey is like that taken by every Austen heroine. She learns that she can only expect joy when she has accepted who she really is. She must throw off the false expectations and wrong ideas that have combined to obscure her true nature and prevented her from what makes her happy. Only when she undergoes this evolution does she have a chance at finding fulfillment; only then does she have the clarity to recognize her partner when he presents himself―and only at that moment is she genuinely worthy of love.”
“Mary’s destiny diverges from that of her sisters. It does not involve broad acres or landed gentry. But it does include a man; and, as in all Austen novels, Mary must decide whether he is the truly the one for her.” It ends with.
Now, even though the book was written in 2020, we admit we haven’t read, but we did order today.
We are interested in this one. What are your thoughts?
