There is more left to uncover! CBS has renewed Matlock for a second season after only two episodes of Season 1. The Kathy Bates-led legal drama had a special premiere with Matlock Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot,” on Sunday, September 22. The series received a Season 2 renewal on the CBS Television Network a month later.
“This reconceived Matlock was devised by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist, and we knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment.
“The audience reception and critical acclaim for it has been overwhelming. We can’t wait to get started on a second season,” Reisenbach added. As announced ahead of Matlock’s second episode, the series premiere pulled in over 10 million viewers with three days of multiplatform viewing.
The series will return with its sophomore season as part of the network’s 2025/2026 broadcast season. But that is still a way out in the show’s timeline. Matlock Season 1, Episode 2, “Rome, in a Day,” aired last week, and Matlock Season 1, Episode 3, “A Guy Named Greg,” airs on Thursday, October 24, on CBS.
Matlock is a reimagining of the classic television series of the same name that starred Andy Griffith in the titular role. Emmy and Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates, who has shared that this will be her final role, stars as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant woman in her 70s who returns to the workforce at the prestigious law firm Jacobson Moore. While there, she investigates “a deeply personal secret of her own,” per CBS’s description. Trust us when we say that’s all you should know before watching; you don’t want this show spoiled.
The legal drama also stars Skye P. Marshall as Olympia, Jason Ritter as Julian, David Del Rio as Billy, Leah Lewis as Sarah, and Beau Bridges as Senior. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman executive produces Matlock alongside Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen, Kat Coiro, and Bates. CBS Studios produces the series for the CBS Television Network and distributes it through Paramount Global Content Distribution.
