Matty is trying a case for the first time in years on Matlock Season 1, Episode 3, “A Guy Named Greg.” The promo video shows Olympia putting Matty on the case, with Matty responding, “I haven’t tried a case in 30 years.” Even though she knows about Matty’s resume, Olympia puts Matty on the wrongful termination case by a woman who claims her boss sexually harassed her.
This new level of responsibility for Matty at Jacobson Moore likely comes as a reaction to Matty and Olympia breaking new ground in their dynamic in Matlock Season 1, Episode 2, “Rome, in a Day.” Though there is still a long way to go, Matty does get some of Olympia’s trust during that episode. Moreover, Matty (and her grandson Alfie) get the passcode to Olympia’s phone. Their next steps are already in motion. The promo video shows Matt and Alife discussing how Matty will get Olympia’s computer to access her emails.
“A Guy Named Greg,” written by Nicki Renna and directed by Brad Silberling, is also a Jane the Virgin reunion of sorts. Matlock showrunner and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman was also the showrunner on The CW series, which starred Yael Grobglas as Petra Solano. Now, Grobglas joins the CBS legal drama in a recurring role as Shae, “the firm’s masterful jury consultant.”
The promo video shows Grobglas in action as Shae pointedly asks, “Why are you nervous? What else is going on?” Of course, the context of knowing she is a “jury consultant and master lie detector” means she could be helpful in this and future cases. Matlock’s promo does show Shae by Matty’s side – with Billy and Sarah – when Matty tells Olympia that she’d “like to go another way if that’s okay.” Shae being an expert at uncovering lies could also jeopardize Matty’s plan for justice, as revealed at the end of Matlock Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.”
Synopsis:
