Vital Decisions in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Man from Grozny’

Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Man from Grozny’ is the best episode of the season so far. That’s a fact. Not only is it an extraordinary and interesting medical case, but the emotional conflicts of the characters take center stage and blend perfectly with the medical aspect of things. It’s the first time we’ve felt this happening.
Until now, the episodes had focused more on medical cases with some emotional aspects scattered here and there, but it’s the first time the show prioritizes the emotional element and makes it shine, perfectly conveying to the viewer what the characters feel and making us reflect.
Good television is the kind that makes you see a point of view that may be different from yours but brings it closer to you in a way that you can understand, regardless of whether you share it or not, and that is Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Man from Grozny’ for you.
In the episode, as shared in depth by Alex Ozerov-Meyer in our exclusive interview, Roman, formerly known as John Doe, is faced with a decision that changes everything. Nichols manages to make his operation a success and Roman is finally able to communicate and tell his story.
But that is all he will be able to do. Oliver and the rest of the team cannot do more for him and Roman will be condemned to live paralyzed in a hospital bed for the rest of his life, barely able to move his eyes. This makes him request euthanasia. That is not life and he only wants to have peace. This decision causes an earthquake.

Unwanted Opinions…

Everyone has an opinion on this in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Man from Grozny,’ especially Oliver and Carol. While Carol believes that what they think doesn’t matter and that they should only consider the will of their patient — spoiler alert! She’s right! —, Oliver can’t just let him go.
He needs to save all of his patients, like a reflection of not being able to save his father when he was little, and he can’t fathom the idea of letting Roman go, he feels like he’s giving up, he feels like he’s failed him. So he tries to convince him.
What Oliver doesn’t understand is that it’s not about that, it’s not about him, it’s about Roman and this is his decision. And yes, of course, helping him do this is very close to the line but Oliver crosses the line for his patients every time, why would this time be any different? Oliver has to learn that sometimes saving someone is about letting them go, it’s about simply helping them stop suffering and go in peace. And we’re glad he finally did.
Nichols knows how much all this is costing Oliver, he knows he’s struggling with Roman’s decision. The way he takes care of his patients, the way he heals them beyond their physical ailments, is something he’s always admired about him. And now Nichols knows that Oliver feels like he can’t heal Roman, so he doesn’t hesitate to be there, by his side, supporting him, just letting him know he can count on him. And we melt with this.
There’s No Time Like the Present

When Oliver finally agrees to help fulfill Roman’s dying wish in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Man from Grozny’ they can really explore together how their stories are sort of a reflection of each other. Roman fought all his life to be able to live with the love of his life in freedom, and until he got to New York he couldn’t do that, he couldn’t be who he is in a public way. On the other hand, Oliver has all that freedom…but he’s determined not to take advantage of it because he’s afraid.
Oliver is too afraid to show himself vulnerable with someone else, to let himself be carried away by what he feels, to even feel…Oliver is afraid to live. But one of the lessons that Roman’s story teaches us is that there’s no time like the present. Life is too short to let yourself be carried away by fear. One day your life can end and you’ll never be able to live those moments that you put off for fear.
Isn’t it better to risk pain than to feel nothing? Oliver takes note of this in Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 7 ‘The Man from Grozny’ and realizes that he can’t wait any longer. It’s time to dare to do something he’s wanted to do for a long time: kiss Nichols. No words, no explanations, just doing what he feels. And we couldn’t be happier about this!

I didn’t want the kiss between Wolf and Nichols. Don’t understand why you’re so happy about it. Not every show needs LGBTQ+ representation.
