Ever since playing Rey in the Star Wars movies, Daisy Ridley has been trying her hand at every genre. She’s tried dystopian with Chaos Walking, comedy drama in Something I Think About Dying, psychological thriller in The Marsh King’s Daughter, and she’s even got a little horror coming in the upcoming movie We Bury the Dead. Her new movie Cleaner follows this trend of Ridley trying new genres. But this time around it’s more John Wick and Die Hard than anything. And we’re down.
In Cleaner Ridley plays an ex-soldier just doing the daily grind of a regular ol’ window cleaner. Not so luckily for her, during her shift a group of activists take over a company’s gala to expose the hosts corruption. But they also have some bad luck as that takeover is hijacked by an extremist within their ranks who is willing to go even further to prove their point. Killing them. That’s what they’re willing to do. And it’s up to Ridley, who shows off her action star skills before delivering a message via walkie to the extremist in charge Die Hard style.
Ultimately, it’s a little cheesy and something people would probably stream than buy an expensive movie ticket to. But it still looks like a watch where I can turn off my brain a little while watching Daisy Ridley run around kicking butt and looking like an emo at the same time. And for those who are ready to brush off this movie because it’s giving too much Die Hard with the taking hostage of a building. Get over yourself. Movies come after Die Hard and I didn’t think about that movie until the comments on the trailer mentioned it. And if they were inspired, then good. That movie was amazing and I wouldn’t mind seeing a woman take on that role made iconic by Bruce Willis.
Read the synopsis below:
Set in present-day London, a group of radical activists take over an energy company’s annual gala, seizing 300 hostages in order to expose the corruption of the hosts. Their just cause is hijacked by an extremist within their ranks, who is ready to murder everyone in the building to send his anarchic message to the world. It falls to an ex-soldier turned window cleaner, played by Ridley, suspended 50 stories up on the outside of the building, to save those trapped inside, including her younger brother.
