If you think that you know what The Santa Class is about, let us assure you that you do not. Going into the movie we thought it was about a woman running a school and a class of people wanting to learn how to be Santa Claus. That is an over simplification of the movie.
It’s about a woman who is dealing with family issues, running a school, rivalry, and having the actual Santa in her school, but he’s got amnesia and doesn’t remember who he is.
It’s a story of faith, belief, and Christmas. It’s a story of figuring out what you want and finding a way to believe in the magic of ones self and the magic of Christmas.
The movie is one of the best of the season because of it’s story, yes. But even more so it’s the comedy and the premise that somehow, no matter how ridiculous it is it is delivered in a way that makes you escape. The Santa Class will have you laughing from the beginning to the end.
Kate runs the North Star Training Academy for Santas. Now, did we know that there was a training academy for Santas? No. But Kate’s Dad saw that there wasn’t one previously and created the academy. As time has gone on, more Santa schools have been created, including one right next door.
The Saint Nicholas School has fired Dan, and he doesn’t get why. In order to try and stay in the Santa game, Dan comes to Kate and begs for a job. Dan is passionate about Santa and about Christmas. Kate is reluctant, but does agree to give Dan a job at the academy.
Now, Kimberley Sustad and Benjamin Ayres are both amazing actors and so seeing them in a movie is everything that I never knew I needed, but I did. The two have a presence on the screen that makes it feel like they are moving in sync. They have a way of playing off of each other and being able to involve other actors in the room subtly but with gusto.
So seeing the two of them in scenes working together and trying to make the best Santa’s that they can, was a very entertaining thing.
When Kate and Dan find the real Santa, you know that it’s going to be entertaining and exciting to watch them bring all the Santa’s to life and to be their very best. As the term progresses and we’re seeing all of the Santa’s that they have come to life in their own unique ways, we’re also seeing Kate and Dan find their way to figuring out what each one of them wants.
The Santas are each embracing who they are and their own unique attributes. They are training to work at the mall, yes, but they are also training for the Christmas Cup. They will be competing against The Saint Nicholas School – which is a big deal. As this movie progresses along we’re filled with laughter – but also a lot of questions.
When will Kate and Dan fall in love? When will Santa remember who he is? Will the Santas win the Christmas cup? Will they be able to handle working in a mall?
And yes, all those questions are answered over the course of the movie. You’ll fall in love with all the Santas, learn more about Santa’s history than you thought possible, and find that Paul Campbell is pretty damn good at performing Shakespeare. But the best thing is that you’ll find is that you’ll be living for Santa Claus being real.
One of the highlights of this movie – and all movies this season have been cameos. Seeing Paul Campbell as himself, was hilarious. He outdid himself and made this writer laugh. He managed to make you think while watching him play what we choose to believe is an exaggerated version of him, because we refuse to think he’s this much of a diva.
Overall The Santa Class is a movie that you don’t want to miss. It’s a movie filled with heart, love, and an extra dose of holiday spirit. It’s a movie filled with a lot of holiday spirit. And bonus – all your questions that we posed earlier will definitely be answered.
We loved it.
