Emily Bett Rickards continues to build on her post Arrow career with indie movies that show her range and commitment to filmmaking. Next up is the biopic Queen of the Ring. Dubbed the first ever million dollar female athlete, it tells the story of Mildred Burke, a champion pro-wrestler who “pioneered the sport in a time all girl wrestling was banned in most of America.”
In the trailer we can see Rickards as single mother Mildred. She’s barely making ends meet when she stumbles across wrestling and instantly falls in love. From there we’re taken through her life, from her training by Billy Wolfe, to actually making into the ring and taking on “big ol’ men” but also other talented women wrestlers. Mildred also comes face to face with the biggest challenge to women during that time: men who didn’t think someone like Mildred should be wrestling. But she persevered.
For fans of Rickards, she has transformed into this character in a way that we haven’t seen before. And yes, we’re talking about the muscles. We knew that Rickards was a talented actress. But this is dedication to the craft. And we’ve gone from “Wow, Emily Bett Rickards is talented and stunning!” to “I NEED EMILY BETT RICKARDS TO BENCH PRESS ME. OMG DO YOU SEE HOW STRONG SHE LOOKS?! I BET SHE COULD CRADLE ME GENTLY IN HER ARMS.”
Starring alongside Rickards and her arms are many recognizable faces. For the Teen Wolf fans we have Tyler Posey as G. Bill. Then there’s Walton Goggins as Jack Pfefer for the Fallout and Justified fans. There’s Gavin Casalegno as Joe Jr. for fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty. And even Marie Avgeropoulos as Elvira Snodgrass if you’re feeling a little nostalgic for another The CW show aka The 100.
