If after our interview with Kim Coates it’s still not clear to you why American Primeval is our new favorite show, it’s time to check out our talk with Derek Hinkey (Red Feather) and Saura Lightfoot Leon (Abish Pratt), who shared with us their perspectives on the impact of the series and the development of their complex characters. Ready?
Here we go!
When asked how they would describe their characters’ growth throughout the series, both actors agreed that it was a transformative journey. Derek spoke of Red Feather as a multifaceted character, as at the beginning Red Feather is deeply marked by the desire for redemption, but throughout the series, he evolves into someone who understands the power of reconciliation.
For her part, Saura described Netflix’s American Primeval Abish Pratt as a woman caught between tradition and the need to survive in an ever-changing world, with a brutal capacity for resilience and vulnerability.
Hinkey and Leon Lightfoot also reflected on the underlying messages of the series, many of which they find relevant today. According to Derek, one of the most powerful aspects of American Primeval is its exploration of the tensions between the past and the present. The struggle to preserve culture and traditions in a world that constantly tries to erase them is not just a thing of the past, as it continues to occur in many communities today.
For Saura, the series highlights the importance of human connections in the face of adversity. Abish represents so many people who fight to keep their families and communities together, even when circumstances are desperate. It’s a lesson in strength and unity that remains valid in our time.
Beyond entertainment, both Derek and Saura see the series as a platform to amplify historically marginalized voices. For Derek, playing Red Feather was an opportunity to honor his own roots and represent stories that are rarely seen on screen. And we agree!
