For a beloved world like TRON, many have been hesitant about the upcoming sequel TRON: Ares. Firstly, sequels have lost their magic with studios seemingly focusing more on how much they can get into their wallet instead of how they can enhance the storyline at the heart of the movie. There’s also the fact that Jared Leto is a controversial figure and his last couple of performances, from Morbius to House of Gucci and The Joker, have been flops or meme-worthy material instead of award-winning fodder. But after watching the first trailer for TRON: Ares, I’ve got to say… it looks good.
TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares (Leto), who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. And the trailer actually has me hyped because the visuals of the world of TRON crashing into the human world look seamless, stunning, and kind of scary. I too would freak out if there was a big red ship flying behind me as I run away. And that car being chopped in half by the lightcycle and the battle in the air? Simple. Effective. So cool looking.
But the part that gets me really really excited for TRON: Ares is the possibility of who will fight back? We saw in TRON: Legacy that there were Programs that sided with Kevin Flynn. And we saw Sam and Quorra make it out of the Program. There’s no way that their influence hasn’t been felt in the human world and the digital one. So I think this trailer is but a taste of what’s to come. Also, I’ll pretty much watch anything with Gillian Anderson if I’m being honest. Even if Jared Leto is also on my screen. Also Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith. The talent.
The feature film is directed by Joachim Rønning and also stars Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Jeff Bridges. Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.
