Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fans had their skin cleared and crops watered last week when we FINALLY got a little teaser trailer for season 3. We’ve been waiting since August 10, 2023, for any news regarding Season 3. Sure, we’ve gotten the occasional sneak peek and some lovely character posters, but no release date. The wait is over! We finally have a release window. Summer 2025. That’s a pretty broad window, so we’ll have to keep watching for another announcement.
In the meantime, let’s think about what we want from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. Please take a look at the trailer, and let’s talk Star Trek.

Strange New Worlds does Clue in the Holodeck
First up, I love it when Strange New Worlds does these goofy, silly scenario episodes. Star Trek can be serious and provide these great adventures and human stories. But for me, most of my favorite episodes of Star Trek are these wild and silly ones where our crew is taken out of their element.
Second, I have questions. The first appearance of the holodeck as we know it today was in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, Gene Roddenberry had the idea for the holodeck way back in 1968 for Star Trek: The Original Series season 3, calling it a “simulated outdoor recreation area.” According to Memory-Alpha, this idea was nixed, likely due to budget restrictions. We do get something like this “simulated outdoor recreation area” in Star Trek: The Animated Series, but it’s not called the holodeck proper until TNG. Are they on the Enterprise? I would assume so. What I want to see in this Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode is our crew cut loose and have some fun. They deserve it. Speaking of cutting loose and having fun, here’s my next want.

Strange New Worlds Goes Meta
The narration refers to a TV show, giving them hope for a better future. Well of course, that’s what Star Trek has done since day one. I can only assume they’ve encountered a culture that has gotten wind of the Federation and wants to make a show out of it. Also, maybe make it a little bit Pigs in Space? Yes, you read that right. Credit to Kate Mora on Bluesky for making that connection. It’s really those levers that make it for me.
As a fan of retro-futuristic aesthetics, this is exactly the kind of thing I want to see in my Star Trek. I’m eager to see what the actual context of this scenario is. If you’ve got ideas, sound off in the comments section!

More Spock/Chapel!
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 looks to be full of surprises, and the big one for me in this trailer is a look at Spock and Chapel waking up together. Based on our big dance number in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 episode 9 “Subspace Rhapsody,” I had figured Spock and Chapel were done, though perhaps after finding each other again in season 2 episode 10 “Hegemony,” maybe they’ve made amends? It’s hard to say exactly what’s happening here, but I ship it. What do you think about this interesting new development? Leave me a comment, and let’s discuss!

PATTON OSWALT IS A VULCAN!
I don’t know about you, but I did not have Patton Oswalt as a Vulcan on my Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 bingo card. First of all, Patton Oswalt is such a fun and delightful geek. From Agents of S. H. I. E. L. D. to Parks & Recreation, I’m always happy when he shows up in my TV shows. I can’t wait to see his take on Vulcans. Also note that he’s carrying a bouquet of flowers. Who is he smitten with? This should be a fun time either way.

A Look at the First Episode!
Towards the end of the trailer, after all the crazy, off-the-wall things, we got a sneak peek of what I can only assume is the opener for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. It’s a lot of phaser fire and some Gorn gone wild, but watching La’an kick butt is always fun for me. I’m eager to see how our crew gets out of this jam. And if we keep spoofing Aliens while we’re at it, that’s a-okay with me.

#MORETEGAS!
I’ve been sounding the bell for #MORETEGAS since the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1. I clamored for more at the end of season 2, and I keep getting promised that we’ll have some actual #MORETEGAS in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. Both Strange New Worlds writer and producer Bill Wolkoff, and Erica Ortegas actress Melissa Navia have been promising #MORETEGAS in their social media posts. Please don’t keep teasing me with more of my favorite Strange New Worlds gal and not giving me what I want! We do get some nice screentime with with Melissa in this trailer, but nothing that hints at her own, individual episode, for which she’s long overdue. I want her backstory! Let’s look back at her during the Klingon War! I want more snarky comments and watching her be the best friend and pilot ever. I repeat, #MORETEGAS!
