Heartstopper fans, grab your tissues (and maybe a celebratory milkshake) because Netflix just confirmed that we are getting more Nick and Charlie. But no, it’s not Season 4. Instead, the streamer has officially greenlit a Heartstopper movie to serve as the grand finale for the beloved queer teen romance.
Announced on the three-year anniversary of the series’ premiere, the film will be directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette) and written by Alice Oseman, based on the upcoming sixth and final volume of her graphic novel series.
Joe Locke and Kit Connor not only return as Nick and Charlie, but also join as executive producers—talk about growth! The final film promises to wrap up their love story, tackling themes of growing up, independence, and whether first love can truly last through the trials of adulthood.
Per Deadline, filming is set for summer 2025, with See-Saw Films returning to produce.
Why did Netflix choose a Heartstopper movie over Season 4?
While fans have been manifesting a Season 4 renewal since Season 3 aired in October 2024, the reality of shifting schedules and declining viewership led Netflix to choose a feature film instead.
According to Deadline, Season 3 saw a 30% drop in views compared to its predecessor, though the show still pulled a solid 10.9 million views by year’s end. Despite this, Heartstopper’s cultural and critical cachet remained untouchable—with another 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and consistent Top 10 placements globally.
Alice Oseman had been hopeful all along. “I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” she said in a Netflix statement. “I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.” Star Kit Connor told Vogue he’d return “as long as it’s done right,” and with the film format, it seems the team can go out with exactly the heart and integrity the show has always championed.
Let’s not forget the logistical hurdles: as What’s On Netflix notes, both leads have exploded in popularity—Locke with Agatha All Along and Connor in Warfare. Alice Oseman’s final volume is also still in the works.
What can you expect from Nick and Charlie’s final chapter?

The Heartstopper movie will mirror Volume 6 of the graphic novels, meaning a finer exploration of young love under strain. Nick is heading to university, Charlie is exploring newfound independence, and their friends are also learning to say goodbye. Expect some emotional punch. And if the show’s previous exploration of mental health, queerness, and friendship is anything to go by, the finale will be tender, layered, and a love letter to its fanbase.
Wash Westmoreland steps in as director, replacing Euros Lyn and Andy Newbery, and is expected to bring cinematic flair to this deeply personal coming-of-age tale. Executive producers from the series (Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Alice Oseman, and Euros Lyn) will all return to steer this farewell right.
Just like Netflix did with Sense8, fans’ passion made this ending possible. And this one promises to be worth every second of the wait.
