After a nice break, St. Denis Medical is back. This week, everyone let their hair down on St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 17, ‘Bruce-ic and the Mus-ic’ as the hospital hosted its 26th annual gala. The gala included a dance competition, some jokes, some relationship drama centered on family planning, and a moment of connection we’ve been waiting for between Matt and Serena.

Focus On The Money

Because St. Denis Medical is an understaffed and underfunded hospital, Joyce constantly seeks ways to raise funds. With their 26th annual gala for the hospital, this became the perfect opportunity. It became much more important to make a great impression when she learned one of the guests in attendance would be potential donor Amelia Irving (Daphnee Duplaix). While we know how much it means to Joyce to make money for the hospital, she doesn’t often take the best approach. Unlike Ron, she’s not one of those who are great with subtlety.
Ron understands what a priority it is to garner support from everyone in attendance, but he does it from a place of simplicity. That includes his talents as Master of Ceremonies. Ron loves hosting the gala because it allows him to stretch his comedic legs. And the staff likes him. As he tried his best to keep things on track by keeping people entertained, Joyce spent far too much time reminding everyone that she was trying to get money. Nobody wants to sit in a room and be reminded repeatedly that the main reason you’re in a room for a fundraiser is to spend money.
Sure, the guests were fully aware of what the gala was intended for, but strongarming someone isn’t the way. When Joyce made herself a co-master of ceremonies, she slightly changed the mood. But Ron did balance it out, and though some of their jokes got to be a little on the personal side, when he came in with the save, as Joyce yet again put her foot in her mouth talking to Amelia, it was evident that they do make a great team. So good, the hospital received a ten-million-dollar donation from her. Ron and Joyce may not always see eye to eye, but they want the same things for the hospital.
Fun Alex

People working in the healthcare industry don’t get much time off. Nor do they have opportunities to dress up for a night out. That’s one of the reasons Alex and Tim were looking forward to the gala. Unfortunately, Tim chose the gala to surprise Alex when he told her he wanted another baby. Talk about a way to put a damper on a good night. This turned what was supposed to be a moment for Alex to have fun and let loose into a night spent having a passive-aggressive argument at the table. We understand that Tim wants his family to grow even more, but we understand Alex’s position.
Alex works hard every single day. Being a Nursing Supervisor is difficult, and her schedule has changed significantly. She’s already spread thin and barely able to spend any time with her kids as it is. Tim seems to think that having another kid is the easiest thing on earth and that Alex can handle the challenge. We don’t doubt that, but Tim should have been respectful of Alex by not bringing that up at the gala, especially in front of her coworkers. That’s an at-home, behind-closed-doors kind of conversation. Ultimately, they did talk things out in private, and they were able to find common ground on the subject.
That McDonald’s Moment

Serena and Matt have been our favorite, will they? Won’t they? Pairing to watch on St. Denis Medical. Lately, they have been working more closely and getting to know each other. Because they’re often so busy caring for patients, they don’t get much time alone to talk. Matt hoped that the gala would be his chance. However, he quickly learned that distractions are everywhere. He spent the night in line placing a drink order for everyone, while Serena was occupied judging the “Dancing with the Doctors” competition and avoiding Bruce after not giving him a perfect score.
Once the night ended we were bummed out for Matt. After Chaplin Steve stole his seat next to Serena, he spent the night sitting at a different table. So he never got to have one conversation with her. And because he was stuck in the drink line for half of the evening, he didn’t even get to eat. This turned out to be a win for him, though. When he and Serena finally did get a second alone, once she found out he hadn’t eaten, she suggested they go to McDonald’s.
We were ecstatic because we finally got the moment we were waiting for. We know it wasn’t a kiss or anything like that. And that’s okay. We’re all good with this relationship being built up as a friendship first. All relationships need to start from a strong foundation. We wanted to see Serena and Matt outside of the hospital. It’s one thing to spend time at work, but another to hang out outside. It was great to see them have that time together where they could be themselves without worrying about running from one emergency to the next. This McDonald’s hangout is a start, and we will gladly take it because that means many more moments to come.
St. Denis Medical airs Tuesday Nights at 8/7c on NBC.
