A whole knew cast of hopefuls are taking a risk for marital bliss in The Ultimatum: Queer Love Season 2. The show is a spin-off of The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, with the first season of Queer Love debuting in 2023. Now we’re back with 12 new hopefuls who are willing to go through trial marriages as a means of seeing if love is truly blind. Wait. Wrong show. They’re here to see if their current partner is the person they want to spend the rest of their lives with. Or, will a new connection threaten everything they’ve built?
Join us for our breakdown of Episodes 1 through 7 of The Ultimatum: Queer Love Season 2. And if you need a little refresher on who is who, head over to Netflix here.
1. Who did you expect to be the drama and who was the drama?

Lizzie: I fully expected AJ to be the drama, and it turned out Magan was the drama! Who would have thought? I mean, Dayna and Mel were also the drama, and Haley had her moments too, but I truly expected AJ to be it considering how the dates went, so I was very surprised to see what ended up happening.
And the changeover was so DRAMATIC™ it’s kinda hilarious. Especially because it feels like the show is saving some stuff for either the next two episodes or maybe even for the reunion. We haven’t gotten the full convos in some cases where I think we would know whose side to be on if we had. That’s gotta be deliberate.
But anyway, I started this thinking everyone was gonna break up and now I think no one—or maybe just one couple—will.
Lyra: I’m with Lizzie on Magan. Who knew that her and Dayna would give us so many, “Are you actually seeing this?!” moments. Because AJ was my top person with the way she was slipping and sliding in between The Ultimatum: Queer Love cast members. But Magan is front and center in this.
The sneakiest drama though is with Mel with Dayna. They got matching tattoos, people! And Mel went and lied to Marie about getting intimate with Dayna. At least Magan was I did, “X, Y, Z, with Haley.” No lies. All truth. Well… as far as we know because if there’s anything this show has, it’s a problem with showing the receipts!
2. Which OG couple do you think is going to get married?

Lizzie: I hesitate to say this, but I think AJ and Britney are gonna make it at this point. Probably Kyle and Bridget, too. If Magan and Dayna do, I’m gonna need a moment or five.
Lyra: By the end of episode 7 of Queer Love, I think AJ and Britney are going to end up married. They didn’t really have moments throughout the experience that seemed like they were entering romantic territory with their trial marriage partners. It looked like friendship to me. And then when they reunited to do the 3 weeks with their original partner they were kind of cute. What was their initial problem again?
As for everyone else, I think they’re going to break up. Most are going to realize that their original partner isn’t the one for them and the experience gave them clarity. But my hope against hope is that a new couple forms from the trial marriages. I like Magan and Haley. There, I said it.
3. Out of all of the contestants on The Ultimatum, who do you trust the least?

Lizzie: Mel. Dayna is a close second, but Mel is a liar and she’s acting one way with Dayna and another with Marie and either she doesn’t know what she wants and is stringing everyone along, which is bad, or she does and is stringing everyone along, which is worse.
Lyra: Mel for sure. Like I mentioned in question 1, Mel is that sneaky drama. She knows what she’s doing is wrong and can hurt her partner. And guess what? SHE STILL DOES IT!
I also don’t trust *drumroll please* Pilar. There is something about her interactions with Kyle that skeeve me off and make me feel like we haven’t seen the whole picture. I’m still thinking about the kiss conversation. Pilar was (gently) mocking Kyle because they didn’t want to kiss Pilar. If you know their boundaries, then why do you keep pushing against them? Do you think they’re suggestions? No. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Period.
4. Which of the trial marriages were your favorite?

Lizzie: Eh, I guess Magan and Haley felt like they really connected? It’s weird because this show should really be about the couples who came together so rooting for them romantically just doesn’t feel good.
Actually, Marita and Britney, truly. They showed up for each other, had really good conversations and were able to help each other grow and reaffirm what each of them wanted going forward. Just the spirit of the experiment.
Lyra: When it comes to trial marriages, I think I enjoyed Magan and Haley. They were providing each other with something that their OG partner wasn’t and it felt genuine. I do think its a bit rushed but this is reality TV we’re talking about.
I would’ve liked to see more of Britney and Marita as well. Too often passion is the basis of a relationship. But what about friendship? Because the conversations they have are gentle, respectful, and they genuinely look like they like spending time with each other without feeling like they HAVE to do it. Plus, Britney made her oxtail.
5. Do you think they brought the receipts when it came to confrontations in these first 7 episodes?

Lizzie: NO. We need more. Surely the show has more and is saving it for a more dramatic moment? What was the full conversation between Magan and Dayna like? Did Dayna and Mel really not go “all the way”? What’s their definition because I don’t know that I agree with it 😂? The show just wasn’t messy enough. But there’s always the reunion!
Lyra: Out of all of the Netflix reality TV shows, Queer Love was pushing it when it came to NOT showing receipts. What do you mean you teased this big fight between Magan and Dayna??? Show us what happened! Don’t tease us and then ultimately show us nothing.
Also, there’s something about the conversations Pilar and Kyle have had that makes it feel like we’re missing a huge chunk of the narrative. Why is Pilar so pressed about the way that Kyle is framing their relationship? Honestly, even Marie and Mel in that car after Mel lied about doing more intimate stuff with Dayna. It didn’t feel like the whole conversation. Instead it feels like bits put together to build a story for us. And it’s bad that I can tell. Make it make sense?
6. If you had to pitch someone besides JoAnna Garcia Swisher to host The Ultimatum: Queer Love, who would it be?

Lizzie: I love JoAnna, I do, but this show needs a queer person to host. Something must be done, ASAP. Bring Reneé Rapp or Ice Spice or any queer celebrity, preferably a woman. It’s never gonna be someone from Drag Race, but we could dream! Or dream of…Hunter Schafer. Why not?
Lyra: Love me some JoAnna since my Reba days. But we need someone who understands these women a little better. Reneé Rapp is a good choice. She’s got the pipes but she’s as whip smart, at least according to all her interviews. But also I would die if someone like Sarah Paulson was the host. That would be game changing for the show.
The Ultimatum: Queer Love Season 2 Episodes 1-7 are available on Netflix.
