Buffy is officially back! Hulu promises to breathe new life into the legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with its reboot. Sarah Michelle Gellar is not only returning as Buffy Summers. She’s also serving as an executive producer. And the essence of the original series is also back! Here’s everything we know.
The Cast:
The story of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale will center on Nova—her name can change—, a reserved and shy high school student who suddenly finds herself chosen as the next Slayer. Ryan Kiera Armstrong will take on this new heroine. Unlike Buffy, Nova is described as more introspective and cerebral, promising a unique take on the classic narrative.
While Armstrong will take the reins, Gellar will appear as a recurring star as Buffy. According to Deadline, several actors will join Armstrong and Gellar as series regulars. Faly Rakotohavana will play Hugo, a privileged and likable geeky high school student. Ava Jean will portray Larkin, described as a “chronic do-gooder.” Sarah Bock, known for her role in Severance, will play Gracie, the leader of a group of church-going students.
Daniel Di Tomasso is set to play Abe, Nova’s single father and a photojournalist. Finally, Jack Cutmore-Scott will step into the role of Mr. Burke, a popular and charismatic teacher.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale is the team behind the scenes. Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of Nomadland, to helm the pilot. The script is penned by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, whose work on Fringe, Prodigal Son, and Poker Face speak volumes.
The Plot:
The official plot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale is still under wraps but, as we said, the reimagined series focuses on a new Teen Vampire Slayer named Nova. She’s an introverted high-school student. Unlike the confident Buffy Summers, Nova’s personality is quieter.
She is chosen as the Slayer in a world where multiple potential Slayers were unleashed in the original series finale. This will create a unique backdrop for her journey. Rather than being a direct reboot, this project is positioned as the next chapter of the Buffyverse.
In an interview with Variety, Gellar shared that it’s not necessary to watch the original series to enjoy the reboot. In her words, “this is a show that will cater definitely to the [original fans]. There will always be Easter eggs because there was Easter eggs in the original…but we also want to introduce it to people that maybe haven’t seen the show.”
Release Date:
Although Hulu has not announced an official premiere date, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale is moving quickly! The show just recently shot the pilot. The show will premiere in 2026.
