We’re back! High Potential Season 2 Episode 2 ‘Checkmate’ solves the serial killer case and finally puts an end to the game. And we think it’s the best thing for the show because it was getting too long, and we need the series to go forward. Ready?
Here we go!
Checkmate

High Potential Season 2 Episode 2 ‘Checkmate’ is a pretty complicated episode to review. There’s not much more to it than what they’re showing us, so there’s no material to analyze. And it’s quite frustrating. All we can say is that the episode was entertaining, but Matthew’s motive for doing everything he did seemed too twisted. Why that rich guy in particular?
It should have been something more personal. Matthew should have tried to destroy the culprit of what happened to his mother, not some random guy, just because he was rich. I don’t know… this story took too long to finally fizzle out.
So yeah, it’s wonderful that it’s over. We hope that from here on, the show can pick up the pace and start delving into more emotional plotlines that have been hanging over it since the end of Season 1, just waiting for this one to end.

Mysteries and Talents

While the serial killer plot didn’t stand out too much for us in High Potential Season 2 Episode 2 ‘Checkmate,’ Roman’s storyline did. This one is interesting. Roman is closer than he seems and is looking out for Morgan, but then, why did he never let her know he was okay? Why is he hiding from the police? We could understand that, for whatever reason, he had to go into hiding, but not why he would make Morgan and her daughter believe he was dead.
Frankly, we don’t think there’s an excuse for that. But the mystery remains. Who is this man helping Roman and using his name? Morgan doesn’t know him, so it’s not someone Roman had dealings with in the past. At least, not in front of Morgan. We can’t wait to find out everything!
On another note, we love that Elliot continues to be himself in High Potential Season 2 Episode 2 ‘Checkmate’ despite some horrible kids making fun of him. And we totally understand Morgan. She’s proud of her son. Elliot is wonderful. But she doesn’t want him to suffer because of some jerks. She wants to protect him.
It’s a difficult balance, trying to protect him without Elliot ending up not being himself just so he can fit in. But we think Morgan did it right because, at the end of the day, she made it clear to Elliot that his whole family would be there for him no matter what, but that he shouldn’t be afraid to be himself just because of what some jerks might think or do. And we loved it. It’s a lesson we should all take note of.

- Elliot is the cutest.

- Oz arresting Matthew. Poetic.
