Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 5 ‘Expecting Trouble’ gave us Mickey and Boone having to partner up to transport a witness in protection out of Edgewater.
While the intensity of action was there, the simmering tension between these two is what drew us in. Because their witness Val Fulton (Emma Sophia) was invasive, distrusting, and observant. She wouldn’t trust either of them to protect her unless they talked through their issues. We as the audience have seen how Mickey and Boone have been walking on eggshells together as co-workers and friends.
Their friendship began to strain once Mickey found out Boone also wanted to be Sheriff. The weeks that followed had Boone handling Skye’s case, which got ugly quickly. For this reason, these two have struggled to be on the same page where they’re fighting for the same cause instead of fighting each other. Which has led them to be stubborn in apologizing for hurting the other. And to have a stranger point out the divide in their relationship from first glance? It rightfully shook Mickey and Boone up to reconcile by the end of the episode.
This hour may have not done much in advancing the plot forward, but we didn’t have a big problem with a slow narrative. As Skye’s murder accusation and trial lasted four episodes and just ended. There’s still a lot of time to mix big action and plot in a meaningful way, and this is just the beginning.
Ultimately, Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 5 ‘Expecting Trouble’ showed us new sides to Mickey, Boone, and Cassidy. Admittingly, it’s exactly what we wanted after a heavy introduction to the show.

Cassidy Is Not Mickey

Morena Baccarin’s Mickey Fox is patient, compassionate, and eager to solve any problem that comes her way.
Such success in running her department is largely due to time spent on the job and confidence. So, when she left her duties to Cassidy before going out of town, we knew things weren’t going to go well at first. Not because we didn’t trust her ability to survive a day in Mickey’s shoes. As a matter of fact, we believe Cassidy and Mickey share many of the same qualities that make them great models of authority. They’re both great at what they do, but it’s because they’re different in approach.
It’s not a bad thing that Cassidy wanted to interrogate people exactly like Mickey would. Due to her admiration for Mickey, Cassidy’s reasons were in the wrong place. Because we’re all unique individuals in life. Nobody can copy someone’s personality and expect to turn into them. Cassidy shutting off her emotions and being stoic in interrogating suspects who started the department fire was wrong. Because she wanted to be someone that wasn’t herself. Such methods worked for Mickey because she has history neglecting her emotions. And she could handle detaching herself when necessary.
Don’t get us wrong, Mickey has a heart that she’s just starting to listen to more often than not. However, Cassidy never had a problem with showing hers on her sleeve. For example, she helped the homeless father and son find a place to live in Season 1, Episode 4 ‘Out of Office’. And protected a woman from experiencing domestic violence in Season 1, Episode 5 ‘Expecting Trouble’. Cassidy’s ability to sympathize with others makes her special. Because her main priority is keeping people safe even if it takes an extra mile. Cassidy isn’t Mickey, and that’s a good thing. She doesn’t need to be anybody but herself to be a cop that people can lean on.
Dawson’s Lasting Impact on Mickey

The handsome undercover traveling cop Dawson was someone Mickey needed to meet at this time in her life. Particularly, he was needed to be gentle reminder to love and trust herself. We don’t know how they met but we can confidently say it was fate. Because he showed her there was nothing wrong with being vulnerable with people who you care about.
Their romance didn’t last long, but his impact has stuck. First, he encouraged Mickey to trust others to catch her when she’s spilling her heart. In return, trusting herself and those she loves has allowed us to see who she really is. A woman who wants to love and be loved. Her insecurities about holding onto people who would embrace all of her have scared her for a long time. Naturally, she has a far of abandonment that’s made her shut people out. As a result, she’s the type to leave before she gets left.
If you asked us, Dawson began the healing process for Mickey to accept her past and recognize it as something that hurt her. Once she did, she realized she could make a better future where she was truly happy. Which is what pushed her to say what she wanted in life out loud for what felt like the first time ever. Mickey didn’t want to be alone anymore. She wanted a full house with slow mornings with her dad and daughter, and she told this to their faces.

Boone Leaving

Mickey showed a lot of courage in Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 5 ‘Expecting Trouble’. And we applaud her for being open with loved ones even if it was scary. Having tough conversations with someone you care about, especially when having to be vulnerable about feelings, is hard to do at any age. It can be even more difficult to do when a friendship like Mickey and Boone’s has been on the rocks for weeks before they tried to amend things.
So, we commend Mickey for being the one to take the step to tell Boone how she didn’t want him to leave Edgewater. Because she wouldn’t have done it if her conversation with Wes and Skye hadn’t gone so well. Mickey had a newfound confidence in believing her personal issues would get fixed if she laid her feelings out. If she ripped up Boone’s resignation and told him how she appreciated him, he’d stay behind.
That’s what she believed and it’s what Mickey wanted to happen.
Unfortunately, we don’t always get what we want. And there’s no guarantee that being vulnerable and telling the truth will get someone the outcome they want. We’re hurting along with Mickey because Boone’s reason in leaving Edgewater has been revealed. It didn’t have anything to do with Mickey because he didn’t want to leave the department. There was just something, or rather someone, that mattered more than his preferences.
Consequently, while her confession was appreciated by Boone, he has a wife he wants to reconnect with. In the end, Mickey should be the first person to understand why he wants to leave because family is important to her too.
Sheriff Country airs weekly on Fridays at 8 pm EST on CBS.
