Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 7 ‘Glory Days’ features a tough to watch case that teaches Mickey and Boone a lesson about love. More specifically, they reflected upon relationships they thought they had let go of after dealing with two high school girls falling in love with their guidance counselor. While that storyline left us with a sour taste in our mouth, we think it was necessary. As those struggling with relationships needed to see how good their partners actually are.
After what felt like a quiet acceptance of their marriage, Mickey and Travis seemed to feel a pull back toward each other. It didn’t feel forced, only gradual. We know they’ll always have a soft spot toward the other for Skye’s sake. But there was something endearing and intimate about their dance in the school gym to end the episode. Like they were choosing to start over with having a dance they never got to have in high school.
The sweetness between couples doesn’t stop there as we learned a lot more about Boone and Nora’s relationship. They decided to ruin the friendship and act on their romantic feelings for each other. Which surprised us a little because it had seemed unrequited in the last episode, but we’ll root for them. Life is too short to be regretful about choices you didn’t make or feelings you didn’t confront. And in context of Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 7 ‘Glory Days’, we watched Mickey and Boone open themselves up to love.

Something Is Brewing Between Mickey and Travis

We’ll admit that we hadn’t really seen a rekindling of flames between Mickey and Travis coming. As amusing as it was to see Wes and Mickey’s high school English teacher try and push them back together, we didn’t think anything of it. Not until we had heard Mickey’s teacher Mr. Diamond suggest that maybe “old flames are like old stars in the sky that refuse to die”. Because Mickey had gone quiet and kept her composure. Like she knew something was lingering between them, but she was hesitant to grab at it. We don’t know much about Mickey’s feelings for Travis or if they’re truly lingering. On the same hand, we can notice her behavior when he’s mentioned and it’s something to point out.
Alongside Travis who is just as weird about her, they’re avoidant about each other. They freeze, stare, and say nothing. When Cassidy broke up with him in Season 1, Episode 6 ‘Exit Interview’, she said that she wanted a relationship like the one he has with Mickey. A relationship with lots of history, shared pictures they cling to, and unshakeable love.
Therefore, we don’t think Mickey and Travis had a fair shot to be together when they were growing up. If we take Skye out of the equation, although neither regret having her in high school, we believe they loved each other. Unfortunately, their love was clouded by other people’s opinions. Along with a lack of communication that cost them. For example, Travis had stepped toe to toe with Wes as teenagers when he brought a drunk Mickey home. When Skye was born, his parents didn’t talk to him for years and he was fine with it. Because he was choosing to be with Mickey, and that was important to him.
Which was something the old Mickey hadn’t understood for a long time. For most of their marriage, her lack of trust to confide in Travis had pushed her to believe he didn’t care about her feelings. It wasn’t his fault; she was independent from a young age and silent suffering was all she knew. While true that Travis made mistakes in distancing himself, both as a teenager and adult, he had always come back to her.

Starting Anew

In Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 7 ‘Glory Days’, we learn more about their relationship and it’s what we wanted to see. Not because we want to ship exes to lovers, but because it feels right. There’s something there between them that’s sparked back to life.
Mickey and Travis had gotten pregnant in their senior year of high school, and it was a surprise. Then, as Mickey progressed, she was judged and ridiculed in classes for having a baby. When she felt alone, Travis had been avoidant which made her feel even more lonely. So, when he apologized for his actions, all we could picture was teenage Mickey beginning to heal. Same goes for Travis’s teenage self who had been holding back his regret for a long time. In being able to let go of the lingering pain of feeling alone and attacked in a vulnerable time in their lives, they were able to see each other clearly for the first time.
When they danced together in the school gym at the end of the episode, we can see the moment Mickey had opened her heart up to Travis. Which is something she had never done before. He had just twirled her in front of a bunch of students teasing that teenagers gossip about everything. Her response was that she didn’t care, and then she held him closer. Our immediate reaction was “oh, Mickey is feeling something here”. Perhaps it was bravery, or freedom she hadn’t embraced before when it came to loving someone openly.
Personally, we think it was the moment where Mickey finally felt safe in letting Travis through her hard exterior that’s healing. He’s a good guy, and it’s true that there’s many out there, but we wouldn’t mind if Mickey took her own advice. Go for the good guy you’ve known forever and see where it takes you.

Boone Ruined The Friendship

Even though they started off as friends, Boone and Nora have a lot of history of their own. Sheriff Country Season 1, Episode 7 ‘Glory Days’ was more character driven versus plot centric, as it usually is, but was different than episodes we’ve seen so far. The plot had a direct impact on character actions and tied together really well to show growth. Additionally, it’s an episode that took a dive into advancing romance between characters which we enjoyed.
We see Nora take a big step forward in this episode as she confronted Boone on his conflicting actions toward her. And we’d have to cheer her on because she was right. If he wasn’t planning on being with her romantically, he had to stop setting up dates to mislead her. As it turned out, Boone was conflicted and held back by his partner’s shadow lingering over them. They were both grieving and unfortunately, he saw their relationship as an obligation until now. And it felt like a betrayal to get with his dead partner’s girlfriend even if he loved her back.
However, that was the issue here. He was thinking of how someone, who isn’t even here anymore, would perceive his actions. Not to his own heart that loved Nora back. So, we’re more than happy to give Nora and Boone a shot now that we know they’ve been fighting feelings for each other. They’ve been through a lot together and deserve the chance to be happy.
Sheriff Country airs weekly on Fridays at 8 pm EST on CBS.
