The Wells Foundation team goes to Italy to crash a wedding and save the non-profit in Loot Season 3, Episode 10, “Hail Mary Time.” This season finale, written by co-creator Matt Hubbard and directed by Anna Dokoza, is big, flashy, and emotional in its quietest moments. Not only are there two cameos (Mario Lopez and philanthropist Melinda French Gates), there’s even more of D’Arcy Carden as Luciana or Ashlee Kates. “Hail Mary Time” doesn’t necessarily rival the season’s two-episode premiere with Henry Winkler or Benjamin Pratt in Loot Season 2. Then again, every guest star is fantastic in their own right.
Regardless, “Hail Mary Time” is at its best when it slows down and gives the characters the time to communicate. Admittedly, some aspects of this finale don’t land as well as they could because the season doesn’t offer them the best support. On the other side of the coin, there’s plenty of ground to cover in a hopeful Season 4 because “Hail Mary Time” certainly delivers some cliffhangers.

The Wells Foundation’s Next Steps
“Hail Mary Time” picks up with the non-profit in its biggest state of crisis yet, with FBI agents everywhere. Still, the stakes aren’t as high as they could be had most of the foundation’s work happened on screen this season. Unfortunately, that disconnect undermines Loot’s best intentions with Sofia’s job offer. There’s no denying that she has been the glue since the series premiere. Sofia’s dedication to the foundation’s actual outreach work is unparalleled. Therefore, it’s beyond deserved and incredibly sweet that Ainsley, Howard, and Nicholas celebrate the offer and Sofia when they hear the news.
It’s only that previous on-screen commitment, in the first season especially, makes the lack of consistency a letdown. Loot should want to show more of the hard work that helps land Sofia her dream job. Doing so would make the offer feel less out of place this season. Not to mention, it would make her choice more complicated, having seen all of Sofia’s effort over the last nine episodes. Either way, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez plays that moment of reflection, while everyone dances, so well. Sofia’s love for everyone is clear, but her choice could go either way. The same is true about the foundation’s trajectory without her, which is one of multiple interesting cliffhangers in this season finale.

Game Changers and Cliffhangers
Molly and Luciana’s dynamic is everything – it’s Maya Rudolph and D’Arcy Carden! How can they not be?! With John gone, Luciana – or Ashlee – can realize that he is the problem. That scene becomes a reflection of Molly’s growth since John caused her heartbreak. When Carden turns to the camera to reveal how devastated Ashlee is, Loot finally lets these two meet on common ground. It’s endearing to see Molly be there for Ashlee, saying, “That’s what these guys want, isn’t it? For us to turn on each other. Cause if we do that, then we aren’t looking at them.” To that point, where do Molly and Ashlee go from here? Ashlee’s resourcefulness could be helpful in the Wells Foundation’s efforts.
It’s also nice to see that Molly and Arthur can be professional after their rocky breakup. Thankfully, Loot avoids the trope of making the exes hostile towards one another. Similarly, it’s refreshing that Maro and Arthur don’t lean into toxic masculinity and brawl over Molly. In fact, “Hail Mary Time” ends up in a far more interesting place by doing the opposite and having the two men get along.
Nevertheless, one of the most exciting aspects of this episode is that Arthur and Molly talk for the first time since their breakup. Albeit, they don’t address all of the pressing issues that spurred the breakup. Still, it’s a big step for Arthur and Molly to be honest about missing each other after failing to embrace “radical honesty.” Loot knows that’s a moment to get swept in, which makes it hilarious that they forget about Maro. So, the double proposal is the right amount of chaos to end on – Ainsley is right to faint. When do we get Loot Season 4?
