Chicago P.D. Season 13, Episode 9 ‘Heroes‘ is a Trudy Platt episode, and I’m going to be really serious, if there’s something we’ve needed for a while is exactly that, a Trudy Platt episode. Of all the series regulars, Amy Morton gets to do the least, perhaps because she’s the most well-adjusted and the show just doesn’t know what to do with her. But we were getting more than a little tired of her just existing in the background of stories, or being there for Voight to say two lines to and nothing more.
‘Heroes’ gives us that. It gives us “I bark once, and then I bite,” Trudy, which is one of the most interesting versions of Trudy. It gives us the Intelligence team backing her up. And it gives Trudy personal stakes for an investigation, even if we personally are only invested because she is. That’s often the case for Chicago P.D., and this works about as well as it can, particularly when it becomes clear that things are not as black and white as she thinks.
I’m not going to let the show off the hook, though. This episode commits the same sins this show always does, particularly when it comes to POC stories. I’m so, so tired of Latino gangs being at the center of every crime in Chicago, and different ones at that! It’s way past the point of being a microaggression, and as a Latina, it’s pretty annoying to have to ignore so many things to try to review this show. This is, after all, already a show that pushes copaganda really hard.

If you can ignore these things, ‘Heroes’ is way more effective than a lot of previous episodes have been, mostly because we like Trudy and we just don’t get enough of her. The one-character-a-week focus doesn’t always work for Chicago P.D., and it hurts some characters more than others. One would think Platt would be one of those characters since she isn’t in the official rotation and it’s been a while since we’ve really had a Trudy-centric episode, but instead, this is just a great opportunity for Morton to shine.
Perhaps, when it comes to Trudy, as much as we want more of her (and will continue to ask for it), we don’t actually need a centric episode every 4 or 5 episodes, because to do that, the show will have to introduce some drama in her life. And personally, I really, really don’t want that. This episode was hard enough. I want her marriage to Mouch to be solid. I don’t want her to be in danger of dying. So, we’ll have to settle for hours like this every once in a while and the knowledge that Trudy Platt will always be there when the team needs her.
