I’m sitting here in the dark, listening to the wind and snow pound against my building, and wondering when the snow will stop. It’s been a day and I am exhausted. I needed an escape and was so thankful that they escape that I could give myself was watching When Calls The Heart.
Right now, the world outside my four walls seems like a dumpster fire and that terrifies me. This weeks When Calls The Heart was both sad and it up lifting. It was about community, building one, and supporting one. It was about giving the benefit of the doubt and saying your apologies when you don’t give it. But I do believe that the most powerful message it gave us this week is that mistakes are made, but who are we to judge.
Hope Valley and Benson Hills are both still dealing with the aftermath of the fire. While some believe that it was MacGinty, we do find out it wasn’t him. He does have an alibi. I am quite shocked that he does have an alibi, because I thought it was him. The last people that I want it to be are Cooper and Toby.
But I will tell you that I admire Cooper and Toby. The two could have died never telling anyone about them starting a fire to heat the stew. But, raised with good morals, the two were unable to live with themselves, knowing that there was a possibility that they started the fire.
So they went to Elizabeth and their parents, all who stood beside them when they went to tell Nathan and the Judge. Cooper and Toby are good kids – both who know that there is a possibility that they are going to be in a lot of trouble for the accident. They also know that they followed the rules – water on the embers and burying them. They did as they had been taught.
There’s a strange thing that happens when you watch this show – you start to think about how no matter how simple life seemed back in the day, it hard its own level of difficulty. It just was measured differently.
Cooper and Toby automatically withdraw and become introverted. They believe that everyone will hate them and the community will hate their parents. Their parents would have to take responsibility and pay for their mistakes.
Not to mention that the kids at school were talking about it being arson and wondering who did it. Elizabeth is having to draw their attention away from the drama and speculation and towards school. The kids are scared and dealing with all of the change – something that is a lot for them.
But it’s one of those things that you have to give the adults of Hope Valley credit for – their want to be able to give these kids the best life possible. The parents of Benson Hills are the same. Yes, they all have a right to be angry and frustrated, thinking secrets are being kept and that they don’t have the right to defend themselves. And then there is the whole thing is would they keep names of the kids secret if it was the other town.
We do find out that Olivers 18th birthday is coming up and Allie decides she wants to throw him a party. He’s never had a birthday party before.
One of the things that I love about Allie is she gives everything that she is to the people that she loves. And hey, I do love that Oliver and Allie are figuring out who they are individually, but are also showing that they care about each other. We also get to see who Oliver is as a person – one that wants to be there for her friends and also for his colleagues.
Oliver has found this beautiful family in the community of Hope Valley. I think that he sees his future in Allie and that’s such a sweet thing to see. When they exchange gifts – you see that he gets her and that he truly cares about her.
Oliver has been one of the greatest people in Hope Valley, because he’s really changed people, but they’ve also changed him. The way that his birthday brings everyone together, but also the way that he makes sure that Cooper and Toby feel loved and supported makes me love him even more.
Hope Valley is a complex place, but the good of Hope Valley will always shine. The community is a place of inspiration.
