There’s a new HBO Original comedy series premiering in 2026. Rooster, from co-showrunners Bill Lawrence & Matt Tarses and starring Steve Carell, will debut in March. HBO announced as much in December 2025 before releasing the full-length trailer in February 2026. Lawrence shared the video on X, writing, “Got to make this with friends. Hope people dig it. Big fun.” In anticipation of Rooster, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about the new show here.

What Is Rooster About?
HBO hasn’t released a lengthy description for the show, but it has shared the following logline:
A comedy set on a college campus, centering on an author’s complicated relationship with his daughter.
Carell stars as the author named Greg, while Charly Clive stars as his daughter, Katie, a professor at Ludlow College. The trailer for Rooster, which you can watch below, reveals more about the characters and plot. Greg visits his daughter because he knows she’s dealing with a problem in her marriage. As it turns out, her husband has left her for a grad student, and the entire college knows about it. As if that’s not enough on her plate, her job may be in jeopardy after accidentally burning down a faculty house and purposefully assaulting a professor (her husband, who says he still loves her).
Walter Mann, who appears to be the college’s dean, realizes that he can utilize Greg’s appeal as an author. Walter also has the excellent quote, “We do hard things to make ourselves stronger, but it can’t continue unless you put some gasoline on the fire,” in the trailer. Greg wrote a book called Rooster, where the titular character is far different from his real life. The Rooster trailer, set to the nostalgic “I Wanna Get Better” by Bleachers, suggests that Greg can be anyone he wants to be, including his fictional character, on a college campus. It also helps that the students see Greg as the character and hype him up to ask people out and attend parties.
