MORE: Everything We Know About Hero Fiennes Tiffin‘s Young Sherlock.
That’s quite the milestone. We think that may have something to do with the avid fans of Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who is set to portray the fictional detective. But we also suspect it’s because people just genuinely love the character of Sherlock Holmes. People have been fans of the British detective created originally by author Arthur Conan Doyle for years. There have been several adaptations over the decades. From television shows to films.
We wondered why people return to the character so often and why he is one that fans never seem to grow tired of. During our exclusive interview with Young Sherlock showrunner Matthew Parkhill and star Dónal Finn, who plays Sherlock’s bestie turned enemy James Moriarty, we asked this very question.
Matthew kicked off the answer and said, “For me…There are three elements. One is [Arthur] Conan Doyle. People forget sometimes that a lot of those stories came out weekly. And he’s just such a great storyteller. There are so many twists and so many turns. That is part of it. The other part for me is that he is an odd character. He’s an oddball. He’s an outsider. I think people are drawn to that.”
Parkhill also added something else to his answer that we really liked.
“Sherlock is a character with answers and certainties. Our Sherlock’s not. But Conan Doyle’s Sherlock is when he gets older. Whether you come back to House or come back to different iterations of Sherlock, people want certainty, and they want answers, and the more uncertain our times, the more we look for certainties in some of our fictional characters.”
We couldn’t agree more about this statement. Sherlock Holmes is a character who never stops searching for the answer. And it’s fun to go on the journey with him as he solves his cases. Dónal Finn gave us his perspective as well, and it was one we hadn’t thought about before. And we thought it was a cool way to look at Sherlock.
