On St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 17, ‘Here A Righteous Woman Comes,’ we got quite a bit of movement in various story lines. The birthing center had its grand opening. It, of course, was not without some chaos. But it did give us an unforgettable moment between Matt and Serena. There was also a very shocking development for Ron.

The birthing center has been one of the biggest projects Joyce has worked on since becoming the administrator for St. Denis. She’s poured every ounce of her energy into it, and the day of the ribbon-cutting has finally arrived. To make the opening perfect, Joyce enlisted the help of Alex, Val, Serena, and Matt. She invited everyone she could think of. It’s a big deal, and the setup was honestly like a wedding. But it’s Joyce, so we wouldn’t expect anything less from her than being completely over the top.
Joyces Meltdown
All seemed to be going well, the turnout was decent, and Joyce was happy. That is, until she face planted right off the stage while performing with a women’s choir. And this was a bad face plant, too. I’m talking, she had to be put in a neck brace and had a big goose egg on her forehead. Because there was a very real possibility she suffered a concussion, Alex stepped in to oversee the duties of the opening.
It was short-lived, though. Because Joyce can’t help herself, she got out of a hospital bed and went to check in on the opening. Despite everyone telling her she needed to rest. And as you would expect, it was a disaster. When Alex pulled Joyce aside, she went into full meltdown mode, which was unfortunately caught on a hot mic inside the gift shop. It was an embarrassing moment for her.
I did and didn’t feel bad for her.
Let me explain. I felt bad for her because she had worked so hard to get to that day. On the other hand, I didn’t feel bad for her because I felt like her need to do everything big always ends up being self-sabotage. Joyce should know by now that it is much better to keep things simple. It’s less stressful that way. Also, people can tell when you’re trying too hard. Joyce’s embarrassment and the catastrophes overshadowed her moment. Alex did make a point to bring Joyce back to get the crowd to acknowledge her and her hard work, but Joyce unexpectedly had some more urgent matters to attend to (More on that later).
Something good that did come of the birthing center was Matt and Serena spending time together.
It’s been a while since we got Matt and Serena spending time together in an episode of St. Denis Medical. And it was worth the wait. The couple originally set to cut the ribbon at the birthing center were unable to attend. The mother went into labor. Alex had to come up with a new plan. That plan involved Matt and Serena stepping in to be the expecting parents. That meant Serena had to throw on the fake belly, and she and Matt had to couple it up.
Pumpkin and Big Papi

The best thing about watching Serena AKA “Pumpkin” and Matt AKA “Big Papi” play a couple was that it rekindled their feelings for one another. It was so cute seeing them be lovey-dovey with one another. They had a natural ease, and I believed they really were a couple about to give birth. Things got real for them when the photographer asked them to kiss so he could capture a picture.
They both said no. In all honesty, I’m glad they did. And I’m glad the photographer didn’t keep pushing. As a fan of Matt and Serena’s, I have been waiting for them to share their first kiss. It just wouldn’t have been the same if they had kissed while pretending to be a couple, and it was forced on them.
But what the fake coupledom did do was make them both realize their feelings for each other were alive and well. And we finally got the long-awaited first kiss. It was super sweet and romantic, and I had all the warm fuzzy feelings. My only problem was that it was so dark because it was nighttime in the parking lot. If I could have changed anything about the kiss, it would have been that. Despite this, the kiss was still worth the wait. And now I’m looking forward to seeing where these two will go from here.
Rons Physical

There was so much going on at St. Denis, including the physicians completing their physicals. Ron came in expecting to get in and get out because he had a fishing trip to get to. When Nurse Kelly (Jayma Mays) checks his blood pressure, it’s high, so she recommends more tests, including an echocardiogram. That’s what he wanted to hear. And well, after the results we understand. After Ron has more tests done, he learns from Dr. Emerson (Ariana Madix) that he has a 90% blockage and, because of this, he will need a triple bypass. That’s scary stuff because something like that could kill him if he doesn’t take care of it. Thankfully, he has people like Bruce and Joyce who left the ribbon-cutting to support him.
This diagnosis for Ron caught me off guard. And I think that’s what made it such a real moment. It was unexpected. Ron thought he was fine. The tests proved otherwise. We’ve all experienced going in for a regular checkup and hearing something we might not have been expecting. All that was on Ron’s mind was fishing with friends. Once he learned he was dealing with a significant health issue, fishing was pushed to the back burner. Ron has a lot to process. This is going to lead to some more emotional storytelling, which I hope to see in the next episode, because we know this is only the beginning.
