NCIS: Sydney Season 3, Episode 13 ‘Lone Wolf: Part Two’ ends without a bang, thankfully—but with plenty of questions for the future. First, because Mackey finally comes clean with JD about what was stolen from the office and reveals that she’s bought a ticket for her son, presumably to Australia. Then, because Evie and Trigger seem to take a step forward with whatever it is they’re doing, which leaves DeShawn in a pretty weird position.
But it’s a good episode, overall. Trigger still works as a character, even if we don’t necessarily believe he’s Evie’s happily ever after. And Doc gets a little romance of his own, which good on you Doc, while he manages to still help, even if in this episode she stays very much in the background.
The question now is, of course, what comes next? For these characters and these relationships. And what does it mean for the upcoming Season 4?

MACKEY AND JD

We’ve gotten a fair bit of episodes lately where Mackey and JD are not doing anything big, there are no declarations of feelings, but the way they care about each other comes through so clearly. It’s obvious in this hour when JD gets shot and Mackey can’t stop touching him softly, can’t help her desperation to make sure he’s okay. And we see it in his relief when he opens his eyes and she’s there.
Later, we get the conversation about Rory, and isn’t it a revelation to see that Jim Dempsey, the man who hides behind a joke with everyone else, never really feels like he has to do that with his partner. She gets the real Jim, and she likes that man. So he isn’t afraid to let him out.
But JD gets the real Mackey, too. The one who shares perhaps the scariest thing in her life with him. The one who does it because she wants to, because she trusts him, not because she has to. And when she does, even though she’s already taken steps to make sure her son is safe, she knows JD will be by her side every step of the way. That’s partnership, yes. But that’s also more. It’s very, very clear.

EVIE AND DESHAW (AND TRIGGER)

This show has put a lot of setup into Evie and DeShawn for me to actually believe Trigger is anything but a detour, but in many ways, it’s a detour that makes sense for them in a way it really doesn’t for Mackey and JD. Because Evie and DeShawn are not ready to admit how much they mean to each other. They’re not ready to label their relationship anything more than a partnership.
But at some point in the future, they might. At some point in the future, Evie might realize that if she has to make a choice, her partner will come first. For now, though, I don’t think I mind her taking some time to remember what it is to be open and vulnerable. That’s a very hard journey for Evie to begin with.
And sure, I don’t know if Trigger is ready either. He’s still holding on to Charlotte, and he’s jumping into something because… what? Not because he’s ready or healed, but because it’s the first time in a while he’s actually feeling something. That’s not exactly the best reason to do something. But it is a reason people do things.
We still have a ways to go this season. To establish this relationship. To see if it’ll crash and burn. And to figure out where DeShawn stands while they figure it out.

Things I think I think:
- Okay, but “you save me, I save you,” got me.
- I mean, that’s a solution, Trigger!
- “You spend time in hell with someone, it bonds you.” It does. But is that bond enough?
- Also, way to look at DeShawn as you say that.
- “I’m with JD.” We know, Mackey.
- Did Trigger confuse Evie with Charlotte?
- “You do what you gotta do, Jim. I won’t expect any less from you.”
- And then he dies. Of course.
- The way Mackey yells Jim, though.
- Mackey was like I’m getting my partner and just my partner, lol.
- She’s so tender with him, too. I’m FINE.
- Doc’s just straight up flirting in the autopsy room.
- I kinda knew this odd couple had it.
- Aw, JD asking if Doc’s okay.
- DeShawn is being very mature about the Evie and Trigger thing.
- “Sometimes good guys make bad choices. It doesn’t change who they are.”
- They are so good with each other.
- Doris, the bagel lady?
- Look, Mackey is reliable!
- “The person you know is gonna show up no matter what.” I mean, I meeeeean.
- The way they laugh together! Awww Evie and DeShawn. You’ll figure it out at some point.
- “You know I had him, right?”
- Mackey checking on Evie too is A+.
- We had too much of the episode left; of course there’s another bomb.
- Mackey comforting JD at the funeral.
- How did the toy soldier even get there?!
- Trigger saying “I need you” to Evie just after seeing Charlotte, okay.
- Well, that was too close.
- “You know, there are easier ways to get me alone.”
- Good on Doc.
- Aw, he answers for Blue. Except when he’s, you know, otherwise occupied.
- Thankfully.
- I mean, bagel sounds good now not gonna lie.
- “You okay, partner?”
- The way they say partner kills me.
- “What are we gonna do about it?” We.
- So we’re gonna meet Mackey’s son?
- Yes, what are you doing?
