Sheriff Country Season 2, Episode 4 “Maria” was an hour that tugged at our hearts as we said goodbye to Rachel Ticotin’s Eva Santos. Honestly, we’re left conflicted about her character. Despite her choice to leave Mickey behind as a child, we’ve grown to like her. She’s honest, regretful of how she treated Mickey, and has proven to us that she has a good heart. If she could have a life do-over, we think she’d take it so she could’ve grown up with Mickey. And that hurts us because we know Mickey would’ve loved that as well.
As a whole, the episode left Mickey reflecting on who was most important to her after dealing with the DEA and the Bulgarians. Now that she has the chance to exhale, she’s ready to turn the next page. And the answer to who Mickey holds dear in life is one that’s quite simple after watching “Maria.” Also, it’s clear if you’ve been paying attention to the motivation behind Mickey’s choice to better herself in the last few months.

Family Is Everything

We’ve learned over time that Mickey hasn’t had the best of childhoods. She had a sometimes absent Wes who always came back to her, and was in foster homes when her father was in jail. Not to mention that she grew up without her mother, whom she idolized as her role model. Eventually, she realized that she was letting her past define her and began to do the work to fix her mindset. We’ll be the first to say that her personal growth has been incredible so far.
Before, she was afraid of communicating in her marriage with Travis because she hated being vulnerable. And her relationship with Skye was rocky for a long time because she wouldn’t let her defenses down. Overall, what makes “Maria” special is that Mickey got to be the caring and present mother she never had. Mickey has sat with the truth that her mother left her behind for the last two weeks. It’s a reality that’s torn her apart since the moment they reunited.
So, we needed to see Mickey actively choose to be better than Eva in “Maria.” Because Eva chose to explain her actions years after the fact. Here, Mickey wasn’t going to let Skye leave the precinct without apologizing for keeping her in the dark about Wes. And that’s why Mickey is so admirable. She had been dealt a bad hand at life, but it didn’t stop her from being a good person. Or a great mother. Eva was right in saying Mickey turned out to be amazing on her own without her parents’ help. Because it’s true that she did the work to be better for herself and those that she loves. Instead of running away from a hard conversation, she embraced a new opportunity to be vulnerable with her daughter.

Wes Isn’t Off the Hook Yet Despite Heroics

Unsurprisingly, the intensity of rescuing the missing girls and Wes brought the lingering tension between Mickey and her parents to a simmer. Mickey let her guard down because saving her father’s life depended on her working with Eva. So, for a blissful hour, we saw them at their best. They partnered up to look for Wes in the woods and hunt the Bulgarians down. Neither hid a comforting smile toward the other when in conversation. Therefore, their goodbye got us a little emotional.
Eva thought they were connecting, so she wanted to come out of the shadows. She wanted to be there for Mickey and reunite after decades of loving her from afar. But there’s nothing to nurture on Mickey’s side of their relationship. Not when she mourned her as Maria so heavily. Eva is practically a stranger to Mickey, and she’s still too hurt by her actions to want her close right now. For that reason, we understood why Mickey denied her request to remain in contact. Also, it’s why we loved the last scene between Eva and Skye. If they get close, maybe it’ll be enough for Mickey to see that her mother wants to be in her life without any conditions.
“Maria” makes it clear that the wounds left behind by her parents aren’t easy for Mickey to close just yet. She may have hugged Wes in relief and said she was worried for him when they reunited. But she also told him that she didn’t forgive him yet for his bizarre lies. So, Mickey may be the one asking to talk after his vacation, but we hope Wes takes control of the conversation. He needs to be the one to grovel for affection even if we’re happy that he’s okay.

A Good Reminder

If you don’t take care of yourself, then there’s a good chance you’ll burn out or forget what matters. The truth that everyone should know after this hour is that there’s more to life than just work. So, we’re applauding “Maria” for showing us that supporting friends when they need a reminder of their self-worth is important. Thanks to an appearance from Jake (Jordan Calloway), Cassidy now feels inspired to think about her happiness.
Which we loved, because we want to see more of what Cassidy is like outside of her uniform. Honestly, we hope this is the push she needs to start thinking of her desires and needs. There were other characters like Boone and Gina that benefited from being checked in on by their friends. After Boone argued with Mickey over his handling of the Elliot case, he was upset with himself. Cassidy would be the one to tell him to step back and take care of himself, and we’re glad he listened.
While he had Cassidy to lean on, Gina had Skye to confide in when waiting for her doctor’s call about her remission status. Yes, we did shed some tears at the sight of everyone being there to watch Gina ring the hospital bell. Because this department is a family. And moments like these prove they’ll always be there for each other.
Sheriff Country airs Fridays on CBS at 8 pm EST.
