With one month left until the premiere of American Gods, Starz has released the main title sequence. For those not familiar with the book, the opening sequence might be a little…confusing.
The opening is meant to represent the old and the new coming together. We have multiple statues and objects of worship, across various religions to represent the Old Gods and the New. As the sequence progresses these statues of old are transformed/overlaid with technology, time, and the flashiness of the 21st century.
It all comes together in the end in the form of a totem, a sacred object that can represent a tribe, a deity, or a clan. It is an object found all over the world and meant to encompass the clashing of the past and the present, in a fight to survive the upcoming war.
Weird? Yes. On point with what this show is about? Absolutely.
Watch the main title sequence for American Gods below:
This adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book tells the story of Shadow Moon, an ex-convict, who experiences a tragedy just as he’s being released. A mysterious encounter sets him off on a cross country road trip with Mr. Wednesday, a con man who knows a little too much about Shadow. Before he knows it Shadow’s embroiled in a battle between the Old Gods and the New ones that have emerged in America.
American Gods premieres Sunday, April 30 at 9/8c on Starz.
