Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 6×03 review : “Fear and Loathing on the Planet of Kitson”

Whenever I get asked the question, Who is your favorite character on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?, I always answer with either Fitz or Simmons. So it should come to no surprise to anyone that to me “Fear and Loathing on the Planet of Kitson” was the best episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D this season. It had everything you could ever want as a fan: High-rolling casino antics. Silly comedy. Emotional moments of friendship. Jokes about Florida. This episode had it all….even a FitzSimmons reunion…..that in typical FitzSimmons fashion ends with them being immediately separated once again. So let’s dive into “Fear and Loathing” by talking about how Fitz and Enoch can’t seem to catch a break.

You know that old saying “If it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all” – that is Fitz and Enoch in this episode. Let us count all the bad things that happen to them in this episode:

  • Robbed of their ship
  • Lose all their money at a casino table when Enoch falls for the worst case of bluffing of all-time
  • Get put into a new game where Fitz is winning until the dealer figures out that he’s cheating with Enoch’s help.
  • Being hunted by Chronicoms (What Enoch is…not a robot as Fitz kept referring to him earlier in the episode as)

Throughout all this, Enoch is loyal towards Fitz and refers to him as his best friend. Fitz doesn’t exactly respond in kind at first with that information but much like Fitz realizes at the end of the episode, they really are now best friends. Yes this realization happens when their lives are on in danger but honestly when isn’t Fitz’s life in danger anymore?

As they are trying to escape a room before Hunter Chronicoms capture them, we get a nice little moment of that friendship between the two as Enoch is feeling down and useless. Fitz is able to pick him right back up by telling him that he’s his best friend.* It was a touching moment that reminds us how much we care for these characters. Enoch has become a favorite of mine on the show and he’s grown on me. Much like over the past year , he has grown on Fitz.

*Before anyone asks, Jemma is Fitz’s soulmate. That’s bigger than friendship in my book.

They are able to break out of the room by destroying the door and Fitz walks out the other side to see Jemma. iS THIS OUR BIG FITZSIMMONS REUNION????? Well, remember what I said about bad luck and Fitz? Well it seems as though the wifey has that “Bad luck, no luck” on her too.

So as for the team going to rescue Fitz, everyone is pissed at Simmons. I don’t care who you are, if you are human and been in space for almost a year– nerves are going to get frayed. Thankfully , the tense situation is interrupted when someone checks the ship. Things go…not so smoothly after Fitz’s name is mentioned and a bounty hunter shows up. They capture him and go off to search for Fitz some more.  After a little roughing up the people who robbed Fitz and Enoch, they figure out that they’ve gone to the casino on Kitson. Smooth sailing, right? Well not exactly as Davis spots some puffs that the two con men were eating and takes it for his own. And also gives some to Simmons and Daisy.

Earlier, Enoch stopped Fitz from eating them as he said they do not go well with humans on empty stomachs. Well we see what he means as Daisy and Simmons go on one hell of a acid trip through the casino. And like most acid trips, they end up seeing imaginary Fitz dancing monkeys and hiding underneath casino tables. Strangely enough, this also gives up what had to be one of my favorite Jemma/Daisy moments of the whole show.

Underneath the table, they talk about how much they care and love one another. Remember that they have been friends now for over 7 years and seen so many things together. Both bare their souls to one another: Jemma on how much she misses Fitz and Daisy on how much she wishes she could have someone in her life to love like a Fitz. These are things you could only tell your best friend (Sure being drugged up because of alien puffs helps but still…)

Jemma is able to find the room Fitz is in thanks to a whistle-like sound Enoch made when he was caught to be a Chronicom. She runs into a guard but the guard is dispatched thanks to the exploding door. AND out of the smoke walks Fitz to see Jemma and Jemma sees Fitz. WILL THIS BE OUR HAPPY ENDING FOR THESE TWO LOVEBIRDS???

(Also Elizabeth Henstridge’s face at that moment when Jemma sees Fitz and all the emotions rush out of her. If you didn’t cry with her, you are a soulless husk)

…Just as this moment happens, the bounty hunter from earlier who escaped Davis’s drugged-out clutches pops up and teleports Fitz away. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Feel free to scream with me FitzSimmons fans. I should have known something was up but my heart outplayed my head.

So what happens next? Well Enoch is now with Simmons, Daisy and the team so they will be on the hunt for Fitz. While I really loved this episode and it’s mix of heart and humor, they need to make sure they don’t make this “Search for Fitz” arc last too much longer. We need our whole team back together and we need them back together now.

  • The closing credits scene has Sarge and his gang firing their huge cannon into the night sky and opening up what looks like a web from a old Star Trek episode. Not good. Not good.
  • “The planet Kitson is a nasty place, absent of any basic scrap of decency.” “Someone just described Florida”  Piper with the line of the night right there.
  • Favorite card game? Always been a Blackjack type of person myself.
  • “For you, my best friend, I would do anything.” Enoch you beautiful bald Chronicom , I love you.
  • For everyone asking “Where the heck is Deke?” Well if the preview for next week’s episode is any indication, we’ll finally get our answer.
