Legacies Season 2 Episode 14, “There’s a Place Where the Lost Things Go,” is a perfect episode to escape into during a chaotic week. It’s also a perfect vacation from the show’s usual format. It’s hard to find bright spots in the world when things are so scary, but it’s comforting to slip into the familiar town of Mystic Falls for at least an hour.
This episode honors film noir in an exciting way that plays with the genre and lets MG steal the show. In an episode that sets Dark Josie up as the Big Bad moving forward, along with the hilariously iconic Necromancer, MG shines as a beacon of hope by the episode’s end.
After all, we could all use a superhero called “The Comforter.”
The mystery of who murdered everyone in the Chambre de Chasse isn’t difficult for fans to deduce after the events of the last few episodes, but it is compelling to watch the characters find out for themselves in real time.
The Salvatore School students have plenty of trauma to work through from Kai Parker’s visit but also from their just as complicated pasts. It is truly moving to see the students rally around each other as they work to find a peace within themselves but also save someone they love.
Instead of losing hope in themselves and their friendships, the Super Squad is even closer by the end of “There’s a Place Where the Lost Things Go,” because their heroic mission is more personal than ever.
Sure, they’ve saved Landon and the town from countless Malivore monsters, but now the students have to save Josie from herself.
The stakes are higher than they’ve probably ever been, so it’s beneficial that this episode is somewhat of a mental health day. Each of the students are able to learn something about themselves and take some time out of their extremely busy lives to listen to their minds and bodies.
Lizzie’s excitement to participate in the exercise shows the growth she’s had both externally and internally. She’s come so far, and that’s something to celebrate. Even her self-awareness regarding the way she treats MG is proof of her growth. Lizzie’s selfishness is slowly and beautifully transforming into selflessness.
Hopefully she can learn to balance the two as the season progresses.
Hope’s takeaway from the game is worrisome, because she stills puts the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her ability to relinquish some of the blame will likely take seasons of personal growth, but that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t get some small wins here and there.
Rafael does his best to assure Hope that her relationship with Landon isn’t doomed, but whatever he says will never be enough. Hope has to realize for herself that Landon can take care of himself. Until then, Hope can always convince herself otherwise.
Landon has wings now! If he can’t fight or wit his way out of a situation, he can always go up, up, and away.
Speaking of Rafael, things are becoming interesting for him as he tries to discover his role in the Necromancer’s schemes. It also means that the potential love triangle between Landon, Hope, and Rafael is on the furthest backburner on the stove.
Rafael is prioritizing himself, his mental health, and figuring out the gaps in his memory, or so it seems.
Vardemus will likely have a similar journey as he pieces his life back together after being stuck in a locker for however long. Some may be hesitant to meet the actual Rupert Vardemus, but I look forward to getting to know him.
As a self-proclaimed TVD Universe expert, my gut always told me that Caroline Forbes wouldn’t have picked Vardemus had the last iteration of his identity been the real one.
Caroline is much smarter than that. She would have spotted him from a mile away and pushed him in the furthest direction from the Salvatore School.
This Vardemus, however, is the one Caroline picked, so I’m excited to see him prove himself in the upcoming episodes.
On a sadder note, the Salvatore School says goodbye to two of its educators this week. Emma gets a big goodbye with Ric, but Dorian is nowhere to be seen.
Dorian has been with the TVD Universe for quite some time. His friendship and partnership with Ric has been a staple of Legacies. It’s a real shame that Dorian didn’t get an on-screen moment to say goodbye to his friend.
Part of me wants to believe this is because Emma’s goodbye is more permanent than Dorian’s, and maybe Dorian will be back in a few weeks to help solve a mystery only Dorian’s extensive knowledge can solve.
The other part of me is worried this is really the end of Dorian’s time at the Salvatore School and on Legacies. However, the TVD Universe has taught me there is always a loophole.
Fingers crossed a loop hole brings Dorian back to the Salvatore School halls at least to say goodbye to Ric. I’m just saying, #JusticeForDorian.
One thing I am very much here for is whatever is going on between Jade and Josie. I do wish that Jade was present more before they started kissing in dreams, because I am a sucker for a good slow burn.
Jade has similar reservations for starting a relationship with Josie that Penelope Park has, but maybe Jade and Josie will have better luck.
All I want is for these characters to be happy and healthy, but monsters and black magic keep interrupting all of the fun and fluff. Good thing I’m a fan of angst and drama. It’s a common side effect of being a TVD Universe super fan.
Other Spelltacular Things:
- My heart grows three sizes every time Lizzie calls Hope by her full name.
- Did Landon’s remind anyone else of Rousseau’s from The Originals?
- “Abracadabra or whatever” – Lizzie Saltzman
Legacies is new Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.
