Look, all we want is a happy ending, Cable Girls. That shouldn’t be too much to ask, should it?
If the final trailer for season 5 is to be believed, then maybe beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe it’ll all depend on …well, our point of view.
Except that is a cop-out. We want an ending, Cable Girls. And not an ambiguous “make of it what you will” one, either. We want some happiness. For Oscar and Carlota, for Marga and Pablo and especially, for Lidia and Francisco.
You know, the happy ending the long time-jump cheated us out of.

And yes, the show set up the Civil War from season one. It always made sense for it to end right here, with this pain, and with this history lesson for everyone – including me. But the tone of the final season, and the very literal full circle moment shouldn’t mean a happy ending is impossible.
If anything, I’ll argue that we’ve earned one.
The show about a friendship has transformed into so much more, and yet, somehow, it has remained that, a show about a group of women who would do anything for each other. That doesn’t seem like it’s going to change in season 5, with the trailer promising a lot more tragedy before it’s all done.

But female-centered stories, particularly period ones, don’t have to be all about pain, and they really, really don’t have to end badly. I promise.
They can be about triumph over a world that is always against you. They can be about the power of friendship, and the bonds that tie us together. And yes, they can end with people moving on, finding new footing, new joys, a new life.
Besides, you already killed Angeles and Carlos. Do we have to suffer more?
Please say no, Cable Girls. We’re begging you.
Cable Girls Season 5B will be available to stream on Netflix on July 3rd.
