The Umbrella Academy‘s second 2 is almost here and we’ve got 5 spoiler free reasons why you should be watching! From the real life connotations of being stuck in the 60’s to making new friends and making a life in a place you barely know anything about, there’s plenty to spiral on. So, sit back, relax, and prepare for the July 31st release date of season 2 of The Umbrella Academy!
1. The real world of the 60’s.
The 60’s in the US weren’t easy. You’ve got political upheaval and tension, hippies galore, and some of the most bigoted people out there. That last part is the most interesting and heartbreaking aspects of season 2. Sure, Diego ended up in an insane asylum in the 60’s and the rest of the siblings are trying to figure everything out by themselves. But everyone is white or white passing. That’s not so for Allison, who got her throat sliced just before ending up in the 60’s. Imagine being stuck in a place you don’t know, while not being able to speak, and surrounded by people that hate you because of the color of your skin? It’s hard AF and Allison survived, thrived, and grew as a person because of all of the RL connotations of what it takes to being a woman of color in 1960’s Texas.

2. The people the Hargreeves meet along the way.
The Hargreeves aren’t alone in their missions to A) make it through the day in general and B) stop the newest apocalypse. They’re surrounded by kindhearted people that took them, despite the weirdness of their arrival. You have Agnes who took in Vanya. Raymond Chestnut that took in Allison. And you have Lila who has bonded with Diego under the strangest of circumstances. Each person the Hargreeves met along the way changed the journey our favorite siblings were on for the better. Hell, this even counts for Klaus who started a cult of loyal followers who are all over the place and not just in Texas.

3. We see a new side of the Hargreeves.
You think you know the Hargreeves. You think you know what makes them tick, what makes them throw themselves in the face of danger, or who they are as siblings. You’d be wrong to think that. And it’s even more apparent in season 2 of The Umbrella Academy that we barely know anything about the siblings. That’s why season 2 is perfection when it comes to the Hargreeves. We get to see them as people and then some. And that’s what makes this season so strong and stand out in comparison to our first time around with our favs.

4. Vanya is finding herself for real this time.
Forget that Vanya was an angry twisted mess of herself who didn’t know how to control her powers by the end of season 1 of The Umbrella Academy. That Vanya is gone and in her place is a young woman who is truly getting to know herself for the first time in ever. No pills and no siblings to fall back on. Just her and her wits. And Agnes of course. The bond that Vanya grows with Agnes is one of such honesty and tender love that I can’t say anymore without spoiling it. But it’s worth it. Just you wait.

5. Those action that we know and love.
One of my favorite things about The Umbrella Academy is all the action. Because let’s be honest here, every single member of the Hargreeves family finds themselves in a tight spot at one time or another. And they fight tooth and nail to survive, thrive, and make destiny their bitch. From what we’ve seen from previews, photos, and the trailer, there’s plenty of that coming our way and then some!
