I remember reading Daphne Du Maurier’s gothic novel Rebecca in high school. It’s not seared in my memory as one of the worst things I read in high school, but I also don’t particularly remember it as something super interesting, and I certainly never imagined everyone would look so pretty as they look in this trailer, but then again, pretty Hollywood people are always way above our expectations of …well, everything.
Plus, I remember the first line of the book. I can’t tel you why, but “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again” is seared into my head. Probably because, if there’s something about Rebecca that always stuck with me, it was that place. It was the feeling of it.
And in that regard, this modern adaptation might do it justice.
I’m still not sure if I’m happy about that or not, but you can check out the trailer below and decide for yourself:
A young newlywed arrives at her husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast and finds herself battling the shadow of his first wife Rebecca, whose legacy lives on in the house long after her death. A modern adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s gothic novel comes to Netflix: starring Armie Hammer, Lily James, and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Will you be watching?
Rebecca will be available on Netflix October 21st.
