Variety gave us some wonderful news, supposedly a prequel to Game of Thrones is in early development. And no, we are not referring to the prequel that is already confirmed and has begun casting, a.k.a. House of The Dragon.
No, this prequel focuses on an entirely different part of the Targaryen family. Primarily, young Aegon Targaryen V (Egg) and Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) set approximately 90 years before ASOIAF.
If you are not familiar with the Tales of Dunk and Egg, let’s give you a brief rundown. George R. R. Martin has written three different novellas following their adventures. They are The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. They also make up A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Seriously, if you haven’t read them, do.
The story is a great one and would make great content as another spin-off of Game of Thrones. As long as they get the right writers and not let Benioff and Weiss near the project with a ten foot pole. We don’t need another disaster that was the finale season of Game of Thrones. So hear us HBO, do it right!
Fair warning, no writer or talent is currently attached to the project and this doesn’t necessarily mean it would move forward. Hollywood is a fickle place and many a series doesn’t go beyond development. Look at the other Game of Thrones prequel with Naomi Watts as an example.
If it does go forward and it is done right, the Tales of Dunk and Egg could be a great series.
