June 5th marks 20 years since the release of Alicia Keys’s debut album ‘Songs In A Minor.’ It was the album that put Alicia Keys on the map, and it changed the game for the R&B music genre in a big way. When ‘Fallin’ came out, the moment we all saw Alicia Keys at the piano and we heard that incredible voice, it’s safe to say we were all falling in love with her.
I was seventeen years old when Alicia Keys came onto the music scene, and I remember being so impressed with her. She was a young Black woman who was not only incredibly talented, but had so much style, stage presence, and confidence. Most importantly, she was unapologetically herself and that made her so relatable.
I have followed her career throughout my entire life, and I go back to Songs in A Minor all the time because it is such a classic album that never goes out of style. If you are new to Alicia Keys or are a longtime fan of her music looking for a way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Songs in A Minor, here’s a list of ways you can do just that.
Listen to the Album

Of course listening to the album is the first thing on this list. Songs In A Minor is an amazing album. Every song is great and there are no skippable tracks. Watch Alicia Keys – Alicia Keys “Songs In A Minor” 10th Anniversary EPK
I know this is from the 10th anniversary but it’s okay to revisit this because it’s a video that gives a tiny glimpse at Songs In A Minor and the impact it has had. Here we are at the 20th anniversary and everything that was said in this video remains true today.
Watch “The B Sides” from Songs in A Minor
I love when Alicia Keys does her “B side” performances. If you don’t know what that is, the “B Sides” are the songs that rarely get performed during live shows etc. Alicia Keys has delighted us time and time again with these and she has some for all of her albums. I actually wrote about one of her B Side performances awhile back. What makes all of Alicia Key’s “B Side” performances so special is she does them all from her home studio. Watching this performance is a perfect way to close out celebrating the 20th anniversary.
