Walking into I Know What You Did Last Summer I thought I knew what kind of show I would be watching. After all, I watched the original movies with Jennifer Love Hewitt and knew the consequences of not speaking up when you’ve messed up big time by running someone over and then pretending like it didn’t happen before skipping off and just living your life. This show is nothing like that. Well, there is the whole killing someone, but it doesn’t go as planned for Allison and Lennon (both played by Madison Iseman) and we love the directions this show took.
First of all, I love how involved the dad (Bill Heck) is in all of this. I was expecting Allison to keep what happened to Lennon a secret. I was expecting her to take her twins place, just like she did when she was in front of her friends, and I’m glad it didn’t go that way. Telling her dad meant there was someone else involved, a grown up who knows how the world works and makes this situation even more complicated because of the choices he makes to protect the only daughter he has left.
Secondly, I found Allison and what I Know What You Did Last Summer does when it comes to her sister very entertaining. I was sure that they were going to make Lennon this sympathetic character who was just misunderstood. And sure, Lennon had her own issues going on that led her to be on that road that night. But she was a real asshole who did unforgivable things to her sister. And I’m not talking about sleeping with the boy her sister was in love with. That was shittty. No, Lennon was a real piece of shit who opened a porn account and named it after her sister.
That’s not sibling feuding. That’s malicious, hateful, and cruel. And honestly, she got what was coming to her and then some. That made it so every revelation that popped up about Lennon, I would turn around and go, “Allison, you were better off without her because that isn’t love and what a sister would do to another.” So what if Allison was a little emo, didn’t have her life figured out, and had few friends. That’s just life sometimes but you don’t go and try to destroy that person’s life by recording pornography while pretending to be your sister.
And then there are the other friends of I Know What You Did Last Summer aka Lennon’s friends aka the other assholes. Allison was absolutely within her right mind to pretend to be her sister because they threw her sister in a cave like nothing when they thought the person they hit was Allison. And as more time passed and the more flashbacks we got, the more I realized I didn’t care if any of them died. Sure, Johnny (Sebastian Amoruso) was friendly with Allison but he decided to dump her ass too and went to rat her out to Margot (Brianne Tju) 2.5 seconds after noticing something suspicious.
Combine that all together and you’ve got a hot mess where you’re rooting for Allison to make it out of this alive while everyone else kickes the bucket. (Even though I have a soft spot for Allison and Margot and how that sapphic relationship is growing.) No, I didn’t enjoy watching the gruesome deaths. That was a little much. But I did like that they got what was coming to them on TV. Because in real life that’s jail time right there and everyone deserves their day in court. Anywho, I Know What You Did Last Summer ends up being better than the OG movies because of how complicated this mess is and the great acting by its lead Madison Iseman.
And honestly, I can’t wait to see more and what happens as the season progresses. Because it’s definitely not what it seems and no one is safe from the darkness that is coming after these young women and men. Also, I still think Lennon is alive. Crazy thought right? But I watched Stranger Things and remember what happened there with Will Byers. There was a conspiracy there and there’s one hear too!
