Apple TV+’s Invasion is about making your stand at the end. It’s also incredibly boring. Like really really boring. We tried to stick with it. We tried to watch and see what the big mystery of it was all about. But honestly, it was so dry, so slow, and we were only interested in the women of Invasion and the LGBTQ ones that drove the story forward and made us feel like love could find a way. And my the end of “Orion” aka episode 3 we were left wondering if this show is going to give us any more than stellar performances by Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha and Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuki.
We might as well start off with Mitsuki. Her relationship with Hinata, played by our favorite Rinko Kikuchi, was beautiful. Like, seriously. So beautiful and so tragic. We just wanted to bundle them up in blankets and protect them from the world. Because what they have, it’s love, it’s strength, it’s commitment. And it pains us to think that Hinata is dead and that Mitsuki is going to have to deal with this all on her own. She deserves that happy ending with the woman she loves and we won’t rest aka stop watching this show until we figure out what happened to Hinata and if by some CRAZY chance she survived.
Because after that hella intimate scene in the cockpit, we need them to survive. Never have we ever seen something so touching and sensual. Seriously, Mitsuki’s voice in her ear was grounding Hinata. And it’s something straight out of a fanfiction that is full of so much love and hope that we just wanted them to cling to each other like any other straight couple would. But they couldn’t cuz expectations and antiquated systems that make it so Mitsuki could only calm the love of her life and show her that she was near and as nervous as she was at being seperated from each other.
Then there was our girl Aneesha. SHE. DOES. NOT. DESERVE. THIS SHIT. Seriously, her husband is a dog and him not being around, we’re ok with that. But enough about him. He’s not important. What is important is Farahani’s performance. Dear lord, the strength in that woman’s bones to deliver powerful performance after powerful performance while juggling all these things and then some. She’s the real MVP of this show. Also, her character is on the kind of journey that we don’t get to see often enough: that of a mother. And with Farahani at the healm of this character’s story, we think she’s going to kill it.
The only outlier in all of this “we’re only here for the girls and the gays” is Shamier Anderson who plays Trevante. Is his character the best and the most interested? Nah. Does Anderson give it his all and prove that he is a talent to be reckoned with? Absolutely. Seriously, he went from Dolls on Wynonna Earp to this, and soon he’ll be in John Wick: Chapter 4. This man is killing and it’s been an honor watching him rise and seeing people fall in love with him as much as the Wynonna Earp fandom has for years upon years. Here’s hoping that his character gets the screentime this actor deserves.
Invasion new episodes are released every Friday on Apple TV+.
