New Amsterdam 4×12, also known as “The Crossover,” saw our favorites being a pain in the ass, not setting boundaries, and then maybe not respecting those boundaries set by others. (No, it’s totally like that.) This episode also made us question Max and how much he’s actually grown throughout this series in comparison to his counterparts and partner in life Helen Sharpe. We’re still not sure of the answer.
Max Really Needs Perspective

Max, why are you the way you are? Seriously, we love you. Always have and we’re sticking around New Amsterdam because you’ve proven yourself to be a caring and kind person. But what you did this episode…you crossed a line. Yes, you were helping someone in need. And yes, the healthcare system known as the NHS isn’t perfect in any way, shape, or form. But you did something that made Helen’s job harder than it already is.
You remember Helen right? You called her babe when you got caught so we can assume you do. Where was the same care that you put into your patients but for Helen? Because for most of “The Crossover” it wasn’t there. And it hurts our hearts because we want good Sharpwin times and to swoon over our favorite ship. But you did something that really tested our patience while putting her position at risk.
*deeeeeeep sigh*
We just want Max to grow a little and get some perspective. We also want him to feed his bae. Like, come on, Max. If you’re going to use the excuse that you’re there to see Helen, GO AND SEE HER! If anything it would give us funny scenes of Helen and Max being them. Also, imagine the gif sets and the videos that could be made of them being a couple. We need that, even if it’s hijinx kind of scenes.
Helen Shaping the Future

We are so happy that Dr. Helen Sharpe is getting such a juicy storyline. She has the opportunity to really change the NHS. And New Amsterdam is really showing in “The Crossover” that she has the power to bring in people that represent the community around her and her staff. That’s why she hired who she did and why she made some choices that others are going to side-eye. But who cares about them right now. Helen is shaping the future.
Helen the character is also shaping other shows and the creators who write them. Right now there is a young person who admires Dr. Sharpe. They see who she is, who she’s becoming, and admire her greatly. Some of these people are creators themselves who are working on their own shows and movies. And we believe with all our hearts that this doctor is going to inspire them to write brilliant women who will shape other futures and worlds.
That’s not to say that Helen is perfect. No character is. And the one thing that bothered us about Helen and “The Crossover” was the way that she reacted to Max stealing. Is it just us or was it a bit OOC for her not to have a conversation with Max about it? Or does she find it difficult to draw lines with him because he made the big move to London and he has no job? Either way, conversations need to be had and we need Helen to continue sticking up for herself.
Lauren Doing the Most

First the good with Lauren. She really didn’t have to go out of her way for that Knicks fan. He was…really something. But she put aside her, “Oh my god, this is ridiculous” to help a patient because she cares and it’s what doctors do. Plus, what would it hurt to just wear his jersey during the surgery? Well, it might hurt her nose but that’s it. And at the end of the day, she got to look at something from someone else’s perspective.
That’s where the good ends and things get a little dicey. Do we want to see Leyla and Lauren back together? Absolutely. Give us all the LGBTQ+ content, please! But Leyla feels betrayed by Lauren and deserves her space at this time. And who is Lauren to say that this has been enough time for them to be apart? Because she’s been calling Leyla, effectively not giving Leyla the space she needs. See? Messy?
*another deep sigh*
But we do understand, a little bit, of what New Amsterdam is trying to do. They’re trying to make Lauren and Leyla talk. They’re trying to make them have a moment to examine who they are, where they’re going, and if their relationship can be salvaged. Also…let’s be honest…when love is involved, things get weird and it doesn’t follow a path that makes total sense. At the end of the day, we’re invested in these two just like we are with Sharpwin.
We just have to give them time and hope they find their way.
New Amsterdam airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
I am admittedly biased but I absolutely love the storyline they have given Dr Wilder. So far it has been all roses and success but soon she must face less rosy moments and I can’t wait to see how the writers have her handle it. To this point of her role on the show, I could not be more thrilled.
