Guillermo del Toro, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, is pushing his creativity in the form of Pinocchio and it’s giving us major The Nightmare Before Christmas vibes with its stop motion. Based on Carlo Collodi’s classic tale, it follows a wooden marionette who is brought to life by magic, love, and heartbreak. A grieving woodcarver named Geppetto sees Pinocchio as an opportunity to mend his heart and move forward in life.
What follows is an astounding adventure that is part mischievous and disobedient. And all of it is grounded in Pinocchio trying to find his place in the world while helping his grieving father. Because there’s no doubt that this is a story of discovery. But it’s also a story about family and what we’re willing to do for those who care for us but stop motion and following in the footsteps of greats like Tim Burton’s work and others like the Fantastic Mr. Fox.
The team behind this stop motion marvel is of course the talented Guillermo del Toro. He’s responsible for works like Pacific Rim and Nightmare Alley. He’s joined by Mark Gustafson who worked on Fantastic Mr. Fox and other claymation shorts. As for the all-star cast, they consist of Ewan McGregor as Jiminy Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, and introducing Gregory Mann as Pinocchio.
Other cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, with Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz and Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton.
