Murderville 1×05 is so much fun, it makes it that much harder to come to terms with the knowledge that it’s the penultimate episode. But at least the season is going out on a high note, with a celebrity guest who is not having any of Terry Seattle’s nonsense. It’s something I didn’t even know I needed until I got it.
The Trainee
Every single celebrity guest star has played along with star Will Arnett‘s antics. Admittedly, with varying degrees of credibility. But that is kinda required, given the conceit of the show. The celebrity star can only improv their way through the “murder investigation” if they agree to play along.
But Sharon Stone didn’t come here to play. And I’m so here for it.
As much as I’ve enjoyed watching Arnett put his guests through the ringer, there was something oddly refreshing about seeing one so disinclined to let him. And it was clear even in the tone of Stone’s “hello” that she was here to chew bubblegum and solve a crime, and she was all out of bubblegum.
Which isn’t to say she was a spoilsport or threw off the dynamics of the show. She very much did not. But she made Arnett work for it, and somehow that made it even better. And while I supposed that Annie Murphy appreciated true crime, Stone was a self-professed fan. It made me want to invite her over to my house for dinner so we could binge documentaries and speculate on the evidence. Except she definitely seems like she wouldn’t hide her opinion of your cooking to spare your feelings, and I’m not sure my ego could take it.
I was really rooting for her in the end, so I was bummed that she chose the wrong suspect as the murderer. But in this case, I think her real-world interest in crime was the cause. She analyzed the crime like one would a real murder – looking at means, motive, and opportunity. But in Murderville, it’s all about the physical evidence.
Notable Moments

- Stone’s reaction to being told she couldn’t fall in love with Terry Seattle was so perfect, they could have ended the episode right there.
- Her little smile at being told it was time to go investigate a murder? You can tell she’s a fan of this stuff. Okay, I take it back. Girl, you can come to my house and binge true crime shows with me any day.
- It never occurred to me that Arnett would try to make the actor playing a corpse crack. And I honestly don’t know why not because of course he would.
- “Are you on the side of science?” hits a little differently nowadays, doesn’t it?
- Between her facial expression and decision to completely ignore the question posed to her by the first suspect – until she actually did, of course – it’s official. I love Sharon Stone.
- “This is not a first day thing!”
- “Oh, thank god!” Stone is an actress, but she has zero poker face.
