Goodnight Mommy has dropped its official trailer for the U.S. remake, and immediately, we can’t help but ask, “Why?”
From what we can tell, this U.S. remake follows the same beats as the original Austrian film from 2014. A set of boys who live with their mother after she’s had face-changing cosmetic surgery and some personal struggles. But there’s something different about their mother, something darker, that makes them come to the conclusion that this is not their mother. This is an imposter. And they’ll do what they must to stop her.
If you’ve watched the original Goodnight Mommy, you know that it’s not what it seems. It never was. But the way that this mystery builds and when the final reveal happens….well, you’re shocked and find yourself wanting to rewatch to catch the small moments that obviously led up to this conclusion. And we’re honestly hoping that this remake of Goodnight Mommy doesn’t go for the same twist as the original did.
The official trailer makes it seem like Naomi Watts, the mother, is going down the same path as Susanne Wuest’s character did in the original. The same thing goes for the boys played by Nicholas Crovetti and Cameron Crovetti. And there are small moments that push the boundaries of what is considered human in this trailer that match up with the original. But again, we’re hoping for more of this thriller while staying true to what was at the heart of the original.
