Lee Jung-jae, internationally known for his role in Netflix’s Squid Game, is revisiting old territory in the series spin-off Ray. Based on the 2020 movie titled Deliver Us From Evil, it tells the story of two opposing forces that clash in an explosive manner. Lee’s character Ray is a heavily tattooed and smooth-looking killer who has dedicated himself to destroying In-Nam, played by Hwang Jung-min. In-Nam killed Ray’s brother and he won’t let anything stop him from pursuing his prey, even if said prey is in Thailand investigating the abduction of a little girl.
According to Variety, Korean media sources are reporting that Lee will star in and co-produce the series. This will be done through his own Artist Studio company and will presumably give him more control over the journey of Ray and what led him to become the trained killer that he is in the original movie. We can also assume that he will be presented with baddies that are worse than him, justifying his actions, making him more dynamic, and (most importantly) getting more perspective on his motivations in Deliver Us From Evil.
Other behind-the-scenes news are setting up this series for success. The series is being co-directed by Shin Woo-seok and Won-Chan Hong, the latter being the original director from Deliver Us From Evil. Also, Hong Kyung-pyo, who was the cinematographer for Parasite, is coming on as director of photography. Even though no streaming platform attachment has been announced in connection to the movie, pre-production is reported to begin in 2023.
Deliver Us From Evil is available on Freevee.
